Guys, my stem opt extension is pending and the temporary visa status on my driving license is expiring soon. Would a stem extension i20 and the receipt of notice of stem EAD application be sufficient for applying for driving license in texas? Or u guys got some suggestions??

 Valid DL and receipt of Stem EAD should be fine for extension upto six months. Call your local DPS to  make sure. 

 i am having the same issue...infact mines already expired.. i went to one in carollton texas..and asked them is there any letter they needed from the college..so that i could renew the driver licence..they said they need a valid six months i20.. and my school wont extend my i 20(im in OPT too)... by the way what  STEM EAD is just once in a life time thing right???

I had similar situation few months back. I went to few DMVs, and finally went to Carrollton, TX. Initially they didn't want to issue DL even with STEM extended OPT I-20 (which is until dec 2012) and Notice of Action from DHS. But they talked to their supervisor and they let me in (they issued me a ticket number to get in line). Again when I went inside, the lady refused, and called her supervisor. The supervisor told that request I-20 won't work and it should be approved. Then she looked at my STEM OPT I-20 request end date and I have no idea what happened to her, she approved it.
I went to 4 DMVs over the 2 whole days, and what I learnt was you need to have 6+ months of "approved stay " (not requested) in US in order to get DL in TX. I just got lucky.

Take the notice of receipt of EAD application (I79C form) and all you gonna need to show them is your valid driver's license and maybe your last EAD card. If they need something else they might wanna see your opt i20 but that's it guys..u are all set.
