Guys, is it big hype David Bechkam coming to US ???
Do you think this is good for US soccer or will he be a biggest $$$$ bust of MLS history? No matter how great of player he was on his prime, he does not have that Charisma anymore. Specially when he won't meet the expections of millions of fan who think he can win every game by himself...........
But at the other hand, he may draw tons of fans which is great for MLS which is trying to create own niche in US soil. JUst an example of what Bechkam presence did to US soccer........ Last friendly game vs CHELSEA brought Actress Eva Longoria, minus new hubby Tony Parker, comedian Drew Carey, NBA star Kevin Garnett, movie producer Brian Grazer, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and English actors John Hurt and Ray Winstone also made what were likely their first trips to Carson, a downright gritty suburb compared to the stars' usual haunt of Beverly Hills.......

.Beckham won't be a dollar bust.

He sold 200,000 "Beckham #23" shirts in the last week only. That's ONLY shirts. The home shirt is $60 and the away shirt is $80. Let's assume that all the 200,000 shirts were home shirts. So, that means, 200,000 X 60 = $ 12,000,000. Now, imagine that, TWELVE MILLION DOLLARS, only in shirts, in the first week.

Now, let us assume, there are 10 million kids in the US who play soccer in school (not in the school team, just the soccer players, you know "the sons" of SOCCER MOMS). If only 20% of those kids' moms decide to buy a Beckham shirt for their kids, that's 2 millions shirts. 2 million X $60 = $ 120 million dollars. But of course, they won't just buy shirts. They will also buy "Beckham #23" shorts and cleats (soccer boots).

In my opinion, he's going to bring millions of dollars to the team and himself. Remember, the people who signed him in for $250 million dollars are businessmen. They would not take that risk if they knew he was going to bust.

He may have been a good player ( Good NOT GREAT) but his circus is embarrasing.. The whole circus crew.. he going to the pitch on a red carpet.. playing 10 mins.. with Mourinho promising his players will not hurt Bekham..............
It was such an embarrassment...................
He may sell a few shirts.. he may hit a few free kicks.. but I hate him.. Loathe the moneygrabbing ....... wifeworshipping..........git......

Very well said mickthesick. Bechkam is not just a name..he is an institution. When I first heard about this deal back in January, I thought L.A. Galaxy were nuts to have invested so much on a 31 year old footballer but now I know for sure that it is a very shrewd business deal. Along with the jerseys he's been selling, he'll as well attract people for games which will only increase the club's revenue.

Besides all the money he makes for the club and himself, most importantly he'll promote football in America.

.Every married man worships his wife. The ones that don't, they get divorced. So, let's not argue about Beckham being a wife-worshipper. In fact, that is actually another reason to like him. That shows that he is just another "ordinary" man, albeit, a man who is going to be richer by $250 million.

And I don't think he likes the amount of press he gets. We only see the money he makes playing football. What we don't realize is that life must be hell for that guy outside his home. Can you imagine being followed by hundreds of people with cameras every second of your life outside your home?

I am not worried about money becasue this county has loads and loads of money. All you have to do is go fetch it.I couldn't agree less to mickthesick about selling the jersies and earning all the dinero.
I want soccer to gain more respect and become more popular here in US. Still MLS is one of the worst league in US and its players are not treated as celebraty (few expections)....
Hope it will add another chapter to US and international soccer.

Beckham is in US because of his wife. Victoria wanted all Hollywood fame, ins and out with celebrities. It is a big mistake he has ever made. Its like him going to Manang Marshygdi Club. He has got so much money already I don't think he was hungry for more money. Its his wife who dragged him to US. I don't think he will last long in LA Galaxy if he loves his football more than anything. Being played in La Liga and EPL all his life, I think US soccer will be a hell for him. I don't know much about US soccer but I am sure it is not better than any of the Home league in European Country. LA Galaxy has been branded "pub team" recently in the UK, I am sure he must be shamed to sign for a club like that.

He should have retired and open a Soccer Academy in US rather than playing for LA Galaxy.

***********Beckaham's football proffession is over*******************

Beckhams and LA Galaxy owners are both winners in this financial arrangement.

Like Mick said, the jerseys, the commercial deals, the Hollywood limelight is the perfect package deal for retirement. With star power like Beckham, MLS may be able to take Soccer to new heights here in the US.

Let's not forget Pele played for NY Cosmos in the 70s.

Although people refer to him as a washed up star, the euphoria Beckham can create is unsurpassed...despit the media attention, money, fame one thing to note is that hezz still humble and is a great person. No one appeals to the masses like this guy...hezz a global sporting icon of all times, jordan is close second...and people who say hezz got old legs are plain ignorant. Cmmon ..Roger Milla was playing upto age 45..Beckham is just in his early 30's ...Hezz still got atleast 3-4 years of solid football still left in him.....Yet again...He has made a big comeback...helping Real Madrid lift La liga, gettin' recalled to the English squad..credibility comes with performance and this guys has done that yet again!!!!!!!!

Someone earlier wrote that Bechkam is here because of his wife and that his career is over. I don't think so. First of all, he is no kid to have taken such a decision just because of his wife. She may have had a say on this but ultimately it is him who makes the final decision. It has to work for him and for his family simultaneously. As for his career, he is a true professional and I'm sure he will give in his best and take everything in his stride.

LA Galaxy is not Real Madrid or Manchester United or AC Milan for that matter. So definitely his detractors will write trash about him as always. He knows already that he can not achieve what he would have achieved if he were to play for top european teams. So I think his vision, his ambitions are pretty much clear to him and I see no reason/s for him fail and succeed ultimately.

I do not see him playing for England again since his move here.
Will Mclaren call him during their next qualifier all the way from US. Also remember Bekham's playing in Sydney, Going all over Asia with the Galaxy. Also with the standard of soccer in US , will he be match fit, will he have the sharpness. A few questions to ponder.

He could have stayed in Europe for another 2 years but why is he HERE. Do u think it is to make popular the game of soccer ...... Is that why he is here..................
NO, the reason he is here is to make the brand, BECKHAM famous. U may be famous all over the world but if u have not conquered the US u are not global enough. NBA may only be played in US but see what a household name LEbron James ( after 3-4 years only) Beckham knows that he'll never fall in that top category until and unless he conquers US. Add to it his wife planning on a career in hollywood, Spice Gals reunioun and mates with KATIE AND TOm ?

He can beat your ass anytime. He has more money than you do. He has sexier wife than you will ever have. He has more fans than the number of words in your vocabulary. He kicks ass.
