Ambitious Telecom Plan [ 2007-2-25 ]

NEPAL Telecom has announced that the process of distributing 3.5 million pre-paid mobile telephones within the next three years has been initiated. There are also plans to distribute 4.3 million land line telephones. It must be considered a very ambitious plan in a country that is slowly trudging in other sectors. In the communications sector, the development has been phenomenal. In the next three years, there will be 16 telephones per every 100 people compared to three per 100 at present. It would be a marked leap in the sector. Communications is very necessary and needs to be kept up-to-date in the changed context when national development requires all the input to make it robust. Nepal Telecom, aware of the need to enhance its capacity, has already taken steps so that the target is met in the next three years. The popularity of the mobile phone is there for everyone to see as they have been contributing to keeping the people in contact wherever they may be or whatever the type of work - personal, business or simply the dissemination of information.

The rapid development of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) in recent years is glaring. In one way or the other, people's work has become more efficient and effective with the modern means of communications. In this connection, the government, too, is streamlining its administrative and other works by banking on ICT. With the fast paced exchange of information and data, much can be gained in the development of the various sectors of the country. Once considered a luxury, communications has become a necessity. In this respect, the telecoms plans to expand the communications network and make it available to the people, in general, must be welcomed.
