I am thinking of going to grad school and I heard that it is a good idea to communicate with the professor in your research interest before actually applying to the school. I am confused as to what should I ask the professor and How to start the communication?

Need advice

Thanks

hey grad,
yes it is always a good idea to communicate with the professors for grad schooling. they are the ones responsible for bringing in grants and hence support your research/studies. go over their websites and try to learn what all research work they've been doing. try to see if there is any project that your proficiency and interest match with.

most of the professors want you to apply to the grad school and get accepted before proceding on with the interaction, but there's no harm in contacting them in prior, ie. before you apply, as it will help you to know more about him and his interest. also, it will give you chance for a better visibility and if he happens to be in the admission committee, it's all good for you.

send him a short email describing your interest, your past work (independent studies and other research work in the relevant field you did, if any, during your UG) and your resume. if possible, call them and talk over the phone, that's even better but send him an email before calling.

Good luck!

int main(void)
{
while(1) KeepWorking();
}

Popped in to correct oldmaven. :P

C/C++ is a smart compiler.don't need to exlicitly return even if the main has 'int' return type.

now let me be more technical to the code.

1) include header is missing and the defintion of KeepWorking UDF is missing as well.....:P
2) TRUE is boolean not 'int' so if you want to EXPLICITLY return, need to write "return 1"

Haha ..

1) It works but i dont want this warning ;) warning: control reaches end of non-void function on my gcc (GCC) 3.4.4 (cygming special) (gdc 0.12, using dmd 0.125)
2) I think i missed in #define TRUE 1 //[winks]

By this time, grad might be more interested in programming principles! LOL

Good day :)

elf,
true...gcc is smarter than bcc so it pops up the warning. even some of the later versions of bcc does. so it's a good programming practice to explicitly mention things. however, it's not mandatory and you get what you want (when you're not returning anything as in this case) ....when you're researching and don't worry about warnings but the result (coz u'll be writing like thousands of line of codes and most of the variables you define are not even used! ). warnings would be aplenty but they can be avoided later on. that was my point. btw, am no comp science major like most of you guys perhaps are....

oldmaven,
that's fine bud!

PS. let's help grad bro now, shall we? :P

GRE does play a big impact while deciding.Do good in GRE and write a good email..good english and excellent grammar.Mostly you will be asked to do literature reviews and grade papers so english is very important. and that too depend upon ur major but eitherway first impression will be the last.
