I guess it, like so many other names, can be both. The Ranas of Nepal went by that name up until Jung Bahadur I believe.

Kunwars are originnaly from Rajasthan..Many centuries agao The Muslim Mogals took over INDIA and killed many Hindu Kings..Junge's granduncle took refuge in Nepal..But since Kunwars were of noble blood, the Shah King let him stay and work in the Palace..Of course the blood runs thicker than water so Junge masterminded the KOT Parva and took over the Power same as his great great grandson.. Gyane..who is still carrying on massacres. Mallas, Shreshtha or other people are mostly who stepped from The Kirates or the mongolians..Rest of bauns thakuris kshettris from India.. So much for a lullaby..g'nite sleep tight don't let the bugs bite...

Kanwars are from india (Punjabs I guess). Kunwars are Nepali. Kunwars are also found in India, but it might be that Nepali kunwars were the descendents from them or they just received the title.
