"~~~Let me take you far away, you'd like on a holiday....~~~" If this song had been serenaded for me, I would, without any hesitation, close my eyes and picture a week of camping in the Rocky mountains, Grand Canyon or even in the Shanandoah mountains! Maybe a day or two of tubing and/or rafting and the rest spent in strenuous hikes, awakened by hot steaming cup of Adhuwa Chiya; accompanied by drifting conversation, punctuated with moments of comfortable silence!!!! Ofcourse, nothing like hitting the "nap sack" with aching limbs!!!! Strange, it has remained "wishful" but now, I am beginning to think that if I talk up a storm about it, it will happen, soon enough! hehe!

Has anyone gone on a camping trip like that or a cross-country trip? Would you please share your experiences on where you went and what you liked about it. If I ever make it there, it would be fun to take along your thoughts too. How about the one place you would desire to visit in this life time????? Care to share?

Sitaraji and others,

Let me share something with you. I live in Kathmandu. I don't have a regular job (Searching for one). I do work what ever it comes on the way including labor work, though I have bachelors degree. I need to make some money to feed my wife, two little kids and myself. My kids go to school I can't effort to buy KHAJA. They are asking me for a "Tin pangre cycle" I am trying to save some money (Rs.2000). It's been three months. Next two months I will be able to buy a bicycle for them.

My sister goes to college. Her fee is almost Rs.700 per month. She wants me to buy brand names clothes for her. I am telling her, when I get a regular job. Behe kasari garne vanne chinta ta arkai cha.

My parents are living in village. They always expect money from me. I sent them three hundred rupees last month. Couldnt send this month.

This is my life. I am struggling very hard just to go through day by day. I dont know where my life leading to. It may be a dantya katha for you folks but it is the truth. Thousands of Nepali are going through this kind of situation.

In this case I dont have anything to write about wishful thinking. Sorry.

Zen.......

I have been to Poconos in PA (Tobyhanna) and the Adirondacks in NY (Catskills). Tobyhanna is too conjested...the camping spots are too close to eachother...and it's like a MELA when it's crowded...raati sutne belaan pani tyo pari patti ko le ghureko, paadheko sab sunne! :s Adirondacks...much, much better!

As for rafting-safting, I've just been to Delaware Water Gap...thikai thiyo.

Ashu, thank you! Appreciate your feedback and your encouragement. Will keep writing and try to be a disciplined writer like yourself. You know that is my pet peeve! :)
Yes, gone are those days of trekking and hiking. It's a shame.

Zen Kunden ji:

Thank you for sharing, truly appreciate it and empathize with you.
"It may be a dantya katha for you folks but it is the truth." you wouldn't know how close to the truth it is for many of us. Perhaps, the circumstances differ but the fact remains, many are hounded by health issues, divorce , single-parenthood, murder/death in the family and/or a handicap child/family members. One reason for my "wishful thinkings" is that it give me solace of a parallel fantasy and the will to make it come true.

Meera, I am ashamed to say, I haven't bee there. :(

S. Gal; Don't take your nose off the book, take the book with you. What are you waiting for girl...?! Go off with your fantastic boyfriend!

Sonyka NY: "aa gai meri sairandri? ;)" Take a laxative, honey ; relax, you sound kinda constipated with all that "SHIT"-ara you carry around with you.

Watch it! Touch the sky: You just made the Sonyka-shit-hit list! :)

Poonte call it "The Call of The Wild"! :) Ok... Three votes for Adirondacks! Thanks Acharya ji!

Jagaltaybhoot, great anecdotes!

I had gone camping for 4 days/nights to Assateague Island. It rained for 3 days and the tent was flooded!

Another time, 6 wild horses(a stallion and his harem of five) attacked the food and utensils in our camp. In the middle of the night, I was trying to shoo them away by throwing our shoes and sand at them. They are known to stampede so I was paranoid!

Delware Water gap in PA is a good one too. In fact, I was there this past weekend for a day long hike. The grades aren't too bad. I would definitely recommend it.

I-87 N exit 24? Damn, that's pretty close from where I live! I smell a Sajha get-together coming up in this area soon. :)

Hey all!!

I wanted to share with you all an article I have come across recently. I am sure many of you have heard of it and are well aware of it. Even then, I thought it would not be a waste to mention about it here on Sajha , for the news relates to someone amongst us that shines like the Sun , true to her name as well as virtues...

I do believe, with due respect to her, that every Sajhabashis should read it. I hope I am not on the dangerous grounds by posting this message...

The article can be found here....

Enjoy!!

Reviving this thread...:-)

No camping, hiking or trekking this year...! Lots of places still to visit like Mustang, She-Phoksundo, Rara, Khaptad, Milke and a few more. Might remain wishful thinkings considering Nepal Ko Awastha...:-(

But certainly going for a bungy jump in the Bhote Koshi... this Dasain. Yippeee!

Well, I just wanted to share my experience of camping in colorado. I did not go to Rocky Mtn but to more to the west and south west of colorado. it is so wonderful experience to camp. It really refreshes your mind. Our first camping was near Telluride and and next was on South fork, near Pagos Spring. I am from the remote village of Nepal where I grew up in GOTTH . camping trip reminded me of the Gothale life...collecting firewood, sitting by fire, cooking food, telling ghost storis, listen to birds, howling of hayena.
surely it is a nice getaway from the city life and be in the tranquility of nature. the camp site we were was at 9,500 ft elevation and in the morning it was 20 F. I woke up with breathtaking view of moring sunshine on the green mountains but it was cold cold cold!!! there was frost on the ground and water was so cold to wash face. but I warmed up with the left over fire and hot and strong coffee....
