Has anybody noticed? Roger's hair band, shoes are made of gold. Nike always made special for me during the Wimbledon.

Haven't noticed that ........But man, 8 straight grand slam finals..has anyone come close to doing that. Surely worth more than gold! He indeed is poetry in motion (almost is like a cliche coming from me ) :). I do hope though Rafi pushes him to his extremeties. But i predict a straight set victory!!!

btw, just to let you know if you have missed, several exhibitional matches are going to be held later this year between Roger and the former king of grass court - Pete Sampras.

while pete is quite a fan of federer's poetries, he claims that the game has slowed down considerably over the last few years and players are no more risk takers enough to come to the net and "play serve and volley". perhaps he is trying to point out the rationale behind federer's domination in the court. :P

In summary, Sampras doesn't think much of the grasscourt tennis currently being played. He doesn't sound terribly convinced that he - soon to turn 36, five years after he walked away from tennis after winning his 14th grand slam title at the US Open - couldn't still get to the net against these guys and put away vintage Pistol Pete volleys.

These guys would include the four-time defending champion, Roger Federer, whom Sampras recalled sparring with in Los Angeles this year and, as he said on Tuesday during a conference call to promote World Team Tennis, "holding serve pretty handily".

The "sad" problem, as Sampras sees it, is that players have surrendered to the slower conditions, the stronger racquets, the fear of risk. He has been watching Federer hang on the baseline, toy with lesser players who won't dare push him the way Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg and Goran Ivanisevic and Patrick Rafter used to chip, charge and challenge Sampras across the 1990s.

"If there is anything Roger doesn't like to see, it is someone coming in and serving and volleying, someone putting pressure on him," Sampras said. "I think my game matched up reasonably well against his."

I think the former king of grass realizes that he is to soon abdicate his throne to the new MUCH BETTER heir. Hence, just like our country, trying out all the desperate measures to hold on to it. Never been a big fan of Sampras ;) but i couldn't help laugh when he kinda noted that he had a better all around game to match Federer's.

yah oys, i was not a big fan of his either. i think federer is more all-round player, anyday. however, the poetry as you pointed out, can have short verses if someone like sampras is playing against him, hoina? :).

talking of favorites, i used to be a die-hard agassi fan. i knew his limitations but his style and attitude never ceases to amaze me. what a man! :D

It depends on what kind of play u like. If you love the net-play, Samparas will most likely be one of your favorite palyers. To me, he is the best.. I simply love that man. I know that Federer will surpass Sampras' 14 grand slam record (if he stays fit for few more years- he is just 25 now). But till then, lets respect the records no matter what kind of play you love. Till then, Sampras is the best palyer. Bjon Borg was very great player but he cut his career short.

Sampras and Federer were both born in August ten year apart. Federer's birthday is August 08, 1981, while Sampras's is August 12, 1971. So, at the time of writing, Sampras is 35, while Federer is 25. And the grandslams make up this way too. For example, Federer won Wimbledon 2005 at the age of 23, while Sampras won Wimbledon 1995, at the same age of 23. And so on.. get the drift?

Some stats about the historic match in the Round of 16. It was the only time they both met and since Sampras has retired, Federer holds a 1-0 lifetime head to head against him. Going into the match,

Pete had never lost a 5-set match at Wimbledon before he lost to Federer 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7, 7- 5.
He had a streak of 31 straight wins at Wimbledon, tying him with Rod Laver.
Pete had won the seven of the last 8 Wimbledons going into the 2001 Wimby.
Pete was looking for his 100th win at Wimbledon when he met Federer. He got his 100th win at Wimbledon with his 3-set win over Martin Lee in R128 the next year. It was also his last win at Wimbledon.

Had Nadal Capitalized one of those break points in the 5th set, would have been a different result.

It was a tense match and after the 4th set, I just though that Nadal was indeed gonna win. But as far as I remember, Nadal squandered two break points and it was Federer all the way after that.
Federer will be the BEST in tennis. It is just a matter of time before he breaks all records in tennis and Sampras will just be a mere shadow of the Swiss.

Roger the greatest of all time. Nadal play match of his life but still come short. Roger could have won French Open this year but he converted 1 break pts out of 17. He will win career grand slams next year. Keep up the good work, Roger.

Will Roger Federer beat Pete Sampras record for the most Grand Slam Titles won? Sure he will. The question that needs to debated for the next few years are

Can he win the French Open?
Will he win 20 Grand Slam titles?

Roger Federer retained his crown as king of Wimbledon, beating young Spanish prince Rafael Nadal to secure his fifth consecutive title, matching the legendary reign of the watching Bjorn Borg, the king of this court in a previous era.

The 7-6 (9-7) 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 6-2 victory he achieved followed a feast of tennis fit for any king. At three hours and 45 minutes, it was the third longest men's single final in Wimbledon's history and the most thrilling climax to the Championships since Goran Ivanisevic's dramatic victory in front of a raucous third Monday Centre Court crowd in 2001.

Federer was at his very best, and he certainly needed to be to hold at bay the tigerish challenge of the Spanish 21-year-old. Last year Nadal lost here in four sets, this time he took the master of grass court tennis the full distance. And next year?

In a breathtaking fifth set Nadal, who had undergone treatment to his right knee towards the end of the previous set, twice held two break points. If he had cashed in on either occasion surely he would have toppled the champion.

But twice Federer rose magnificently to the challenge, fighting off the danger before he broke Nadal for what proved to be a crucial 4-2 lead.

Yet at the start it had seemed Federer would be in for a straightforward coronation. He broke for a 2-0 lead in the opening set, only for Nadal to pull level and push it into a tie-break.

Here a Federer trademark forehand and one of the 24 aces he struck in the match left him with three set points, only for the bounding Nadal to fight off all three and resist a fourth set point before Federer finally clinched it, by nine points to seven with a cross-court backhand volley, sparking a triumphant pirouette.

Was Nadal downhearted? Never. He set about clawing back Federer's advantage, and did not need long to do so. Three aces got the Swiss out of trouble in the sixth game of the second set but, with a 5-4 lead, Nadal conjured an incredible backhand winner while in a seated position on the baseline.

The startled Federer sent a forehand wide on the next rally to offer the challenger two set points, but he needed only one, levelling the match with a glorious backhand passing shot.

As it has done to so many of his opponents, Nadal's relentless play seemed to be getting to Federer, but his ability to produce aces and spectacular winners kept him in front in the third set.

As it moved towards another tie-break, Federer became involved in his longest match at this year's Wimbledon, though he took the tiebreak more easily this time, by seven points to three.

Any thought that it might be simple from there on for Federer lasted as long as the opening game of the fourth set, Nadal breaking with a forehand service return which trapped the champion coming in.

Another service break put Nadal in command at 3-0 but only after he had issued a Hawk-Eye challenge on a forehand called out. The system decided it was in by a whisker, provoking an eruption by the normally calm Federer. "How in the world was that ball in?" he asked umpire Carlos Ramos. "It [Hawk-Eye] is killing me today."

There was hope for Federer in this otherwise bleak part of the match when Nadal called for treatment to his right knee, after which he was unable to jump off so effectively on his serve, but he held on to take the set and again level things after three hours seven minutes.

Then followed the high drama of the deciding set. At 1-1 two Nadal errors saved Federer at 15-40. Then at 2-2 the champion again fell 15-40 behind but battled clear thanks to a Nadal error, followed by a crunching service winner. It provided the all-important breakthrough as Nadal then dropped serve to another of Federer's forehand specials

With reason, the Swiss exulted. Federer sealed his initiative with three aces in the next game and Nadal, for once, had nothing left. He saved one match point on his own serve before, on the second, Federer hammered home an overhead smash and fell forward onto his face. Flat out maybe, but Wimbledon's winner for the fifth time.

Admiring it all from the Royal Box was Bjorn Borg, who was crowned here every year from 1976 until 1980. The two men are now level in the Wimbledon record books but next year will it be King Roger VI?

Meanwhile Roger will go on to break the record of 14 slams, and continue to set new records....
If he can win French Open next year, it will be justice to his overwhelming career....
It was a treat to watch Roger come back firing in the rare 5th set. That was the difference between a true champion and a talented player.

Both Nadal and Federer have made the world of tennis an exciting story....
