Rang De Basanti,

I happened to watch it yesterday and enjoyed watching it. However, I agree with the article by Kanak mani Dixit regarding the "Message" of the film - which seem to be quite misguiding the youth, if one takes it literally. I guess the killing of the corupt minister is a symbolic representation to destroy the corrupt system - after all cinema is an abstract art. A very meaningful movie and worth watching...

Finally watched it. Phew... and like it. Matter of fact, it couldn't be any better. The director shows exactly what he wanted to show.. and it's delight to watch the character actors in action. All of them had amazing roles -- even the small ones. And it's amazing to watch Aamir Khan, just mingling with the crowd without strutting his super stardom. He never tries to steal the show from others, not even till the end. eh... Ethics, humanity, Gandhian, ha... comeon man, gimme a break!!

I have been watching Khan's movies over a period of time, except mangal pandey, I have watched them all and some movies have been repeated too. He is an acting machine, never hams, never overreacts, dialouge delivery is at very optimum pitch in every situation and the comedy is simply out of this world.

One of the best actors of Bollywood ever.

Yup, and he has this kick-ass attitude that I like about him. He doesn't attend award shows at all. He hardly gives an interview to the media. In fact, he gave interviews to the media only when Mangal Pandey was about to release. Media accused him of using them only when he needs them. So, for Rang De Basanti, he didn't even give single interview. He just ignored the media. Insted, he went to the chatrooms and encouraged youth to watch the movie. On the top of that, he sued Filmfare, one of the largest Indian movie magazine producers for using his pictures without his consent. Ha... On the other hand, there is Shahrukh Khan, who simply worships Filmfare. No wonder he always wins. :D It took Aamir Khan nine consecutive nominations to win his second Filmfare award after his first movie. If anyone had watched the Zee Cine Award, boy!! Shahrukh was simply massaging Yash Chopra's balls. eh... for about half an hour. :D Same Yash Chopra, who had fall out with Aamir khan over a script of "Darr", which finally went to Shahrukh and face lifted his career. eh... History 101 about movies. :)

Having bought into all the hype, I too am quite looking forward to watching this movie. Unfortunately, my source of movies - Netflix, does not carry this title. I have put in a request, so hopefully they will soon. And Dalli Resham and I, among many others, can enjoy it.

Ok so here is my two cents about the movie.
I also HEARD a lot of GOOD THINGS about this movie before I decided to watch it few weeks back and actually DID watch it. Good movie, descent performances by most of the actors, thought provoking message of course, for which the movie was/is hyped about the most.
Nevertheless, I am still NOT convinced by the way in which the film tells the youth to contribute for their countries. In my opinion, I think the movie showed a bit too much MASALA, as any other bollywood movies are entitled to, by killing of the minister and then confession by the protagonists on air (live on radio) about the killing, then the protagonists getting killed one after the other and so on. While it is heartening to see the relevance and necessity of the message the movie is trying to convey to the youth of a nation, more so REALISTIC in our case at present, who would BELIEVE that one has to actually DIE in today's time, just like the martyrs did in the history, to contribute for the nation?
I mean com'on now, there are loads of other ways by which youth can contribute for the betterment of any nation no matter how hopeless the condition of the country is. While the message from the movie is thought provoking one, the way it entails looks UNREALISTIC and INCONVINCING. All in all, a good movie worth a watch, but be ready for some unrealistic MASALAS.

BTW, if you really want to see GOOD bollywood movie for today's generation who have migrated to different parts of the world away from their countries for various reasons, watch SWADES. This is one bollywood movie that has immensely helped me to stick to my conviction for my motherland, NEPAL.

What a movie!!!

Even though Bollywood boosts to produce the most number of motion pictures per year than any other movie industry, the movies just lack in quality. The lack in quality of direction, script, storyline, and acting are all vivid in bollywood movies. Barely any actors and actress in this industry are products of theatre or drama schools, or posses the pungent acting skills to penetrate the industry run mainly by a group of families and passed along. Rather they are a collection of people who are better looking than average and have outgrown in fashion industry, people who are close friends with industrialists or underground mafia leaders who finance the producers and are seen as good investments, or people who are akins to actors, directors, or studio owners.
Time has changed, and so has bollywood. These days when you slide your movie in you dvd player and it starts to spin, you are greeted with various highly animated movie trailers. Even the casting names appear fancifully rotating, revolving, disappearing from and to every angle the graphic designer could have found. And you quickly tend to think “Ow bollywood has changed or may have improved.” But then the movies starts and you find yourself again either trying to entertain yourself or trying to not get bored by a long movie with story that redundantly runs in circle just like the casting names. May be the same graphic designer got his share of input in the storyline, you would assume. And when the movie finally does get over, you are more satisfied that it did happen than by what you just watched. You are left with the same “Well, what to expect from a bollywood movie” kind of attitude.
Bollywood movies lack the core of good movies; its lacks director’s imagination to push actors to produce their best acting, and it lacks good story line, essential ingredients to a good movie. When you are struck with a headline that a nine year old bollywood director created a World Record by being the youngest in his profession, you are left with mixed feeling; you don’t know whether to applause or to quickly pull out “movies to avoid” list and jot the movie’s name down.
I am not sure when bollywood realizes why they have not won any Oscar while they constantly whine about how partial Oscar committee has been to award only the movies from west.
