Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology...........is all waste of Time and Money...........You can't really make good money after graduateion. Study something else. Good Luck.

You have to work really hard for these subjects....Do lots of research, spend hours on Labs doing all pippetting and stuffs.......when u graduate, you'll hardly make 35k whereas other majors such as computer scince , IT, Business, they make at least 50 k. change ur mind.

Don't listen to that arrogant prick. choose what you will be comfortable doing and you will be satisfied for a long time. Its true that you gotta look at money as well, but not at the cost of making your life a living hell. Dont be like bheda bhakra and do what everyone is doing just because they all are doing it. Different people have different talent. Each finger on our hands have different prints. Go for something that you will will enjoy doing for the rest of your life. I wouldn't even dream of doing accounts for even a year. Whereas someone else might just be really good with numbers and hate coding (which is what I'm learning). Making the right choice, makes all the difference in the world. What is the right choice? Make one that you'll know you'll love and stick by it no matter what. :D If money is your MAIN motive then I have nothing to say to you.

Biotech is surely best option among the three. I would suggest concentration in molecular biology would be even better as most of the research works these days are done at molecular level. Also job opportunity is best for biotech.

Arrogant, You need to work hard in every subject in oder to be oustanding. Still snake, none of the above courses come separate. Unless you complete the course of above three your graduation is incomplete. The in depth concept may be different in extent though. Such as u will be doing cloning, PCR, flow, norther-southern atleast one of them or more which is biotechnology. Biotechnology doen't necessarily mean the only recombinant technology. You will be doing antibody titer (if you choose animal microbilogy, I am not sure about plant pathology or disease), ChIP, Immunofluorescence, which might come both microbiology, biotechnology but you can consider it as immunology. I hope it clears your question. I am not a experty but just trying to share some GK. BTW, Research in life science won't die and won't be affected by recession that much unless country is a complete failure. Moreover, you won't be doing marketing when you choose life sciences/biology so, regardless of money just hop in. Good luck !!!

No matter what u do in Science, it sucks...u are just wasting you time doing research and that crap..you wont' even get paid well.........you'll get nothing compared to Engineering or Computer Science...Study some technical subjects...Don't rely on pure science...You'll hate it when u graduate. .. . .If u wanna do PHD go for it but if ur aim is to make money don't even plan to Study science. Good Luck

Practially Arrogant is Correct...If u really wanna make money don't study Science...if u wanna make money study some other technical subjects....but if u enjoy studying science, u have to do PHD before u can land for a real job and as Arrogant said, the pay is not good for science graduates unless u are extraordinary. Biotechnology, Biochemistry, research all these sounds good but infact they are not... U still have time to decide. Racheeta.

So true, Arrogant and Racheeta. After being almost 4 years in biotech industry and getting some the feel of it. I really do not recommend anyone to study science. For any majors such as micro, biotech or biology, if you just plan on doing bachelor's please do not go for these. But if you aim on doing phd then its okay to proceed. You will not make lot of money with just bachelor's in these fields. Besides, with just BS, you wont be doing research as well, the way we often dream during our college days. So my advise is go for engineering, IT or accounting, medicine, pharmacy anything that pays you well in long run. Even though, its not always about money, to an extent it is because one day you will have family, you will wanna have decent car, house and be able to go on vacations often. Making more money obviously gives you more flexibility financewise. But, if you are so determined and have courage and passion for science, and would some day like to explore biology world with advanced degree, who knows you might be the next researcher to have breakthroughs in molecular biology or medical field.

I agree with all the views about pros and cons studying biological sciences. I studied biotech in my college years and am involved in a research right now. As far my experience with studying science 1. I simply love biology (particularly Immunology) - I did research in Immunology when I was in college for nearly 2 years with a great mentor. I loved it and made me decide to go further into the field of Immunology. 2. I love to spend time in lab. It is not like other (9 to 5) jobs - you set your own time, do experiments, troubleshoot if something does not work. I can tell you, most of us like me in research field certainly ends up staying more in lab than at home. But as for me, I really don't feel like I am working when I am in lab - and hours just fly by. 3. I dont know about all the biotech company and research fields, well as for the one I am working at - decent pay and fexible amount of vacations to enjoy. 4. Prestige - I think prestige is what you get from the field of science. I agree you don't get rich for a while, but you sure get name and fame. You will realize once you are in this field that when you do research, people all around you are well-known and famous (hope I reach to that point one day). 5. You are learning new things everyday. Unlike other jobs you do - you end of doing same thing for your whole life. As for the field of science, everything is new everyday. You are constantly keeping pace to find something new. 6. Science is not for everybody. I have seen lots of people study science - theory part basically. You need to be more partical and have more diversity in mind to study and know science. 7. I certainly agree doing just undergraduate in biotechnology might not land you in the job with salary range of 50K, you will certainly need to get Ph.D and postdoc for higher pay. When you are done with postdoc - the salary range for "scientist" are generally 100K-200K.If you wnat more than this, try being a Investment Banker - you can end up earning 50-70 million a year. 8. Science and Health care fields are recession-proof, if you are qualified enough. There are jobs always lying around. Particularly as NIH just got 50 billion as research stimulus. 9. Study what you are good at - not what you will make money out of. In long run during you life, you will be very happy with your decision. 10. Most of the high-tech research centers (I am not talking about private small biotechs) are non-profit or government funded/owned, this will help you getting H1B without problem, GC without tension. 11. One thing I want you all to know if you are fresh into college and studying science. YOU WILL NOT GET A JOB IN RESEARCH FIELD, IF YOU STUDY THEORY ONLY (meaning going to class, passing tests, graduating). EVEN IF YOUR GPA IS MORE THAN 3.75, YOU WILL NEED TO SHOW THAT YOU HAVE DONE RESEARCH IN YOUR COLLEGE YEARS. This will help you immensely when you will try to score a job.
Thanks, Dapu

If you are studying biological science just because it sounds so coooolllll and you wanna make money......STOP it right there....Don't go any further.....Its gonna be total waste of ur time...Study something else. But if u really enjoy science go for it and you've to study until u get PHD....If you don't wanna study till PHD, don't study any biological science.. Hope this helps.

Biological Science padhnu Waiyat ho...Afu ta padhera fasiyo. Study subjects like Chemical Engineering, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Biomedical Engineering, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs. Don't Study: Just Plain Biology as Major, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Zoology, Botany------>>> Only Good If u do PHD.

I agree 100% with dapu....studied biology during undergrad...was engaged in research in college plus went to other universities during summer for research.....after graduated got a good job in biotech company with good salary.....and now am doing PhD.....its even great experience so far with everything including $$......so i would say if you really like the field and have true passion...go for it...u will earn good money too plus good reputation.....for college students please engage yourself in academic research from your freshman year and dont waste your time during summer by only working...try to get paid research internship....it will definitely count after you graduate....and land you in top graduate school..atleast it did for me.....

Like dapu said, if you have passion for biology, enjoy working in lab, time does go fast in lab, wanna get some fame and name, i dont know about prestige (ya if you have phd), recession proof (yes very true)....most of all like someone said study what you are good at and just love it, not because you want to make more money.

thanks to all of you guys for sharing your experiences. I have just graduated in biology and i am still very confused about my gradate study . I found it very true about finding very few jobs with undergraduate degree in biology. I think it is a huge disadvantage for biology students. So with a open attitude i am still trying to figure it out, if i should be changing subject or stick to it. I do think that i dont really like biology like i did before in my high school. I have already spend five years in my undergrad. I feel like life sucks when i think about my future. I just dont want to make a bad choice and regret later. With most of your views it did seem like a tough and bumpy road, if i still continue in biology. I will certainly remember all the suggestions that you guys have given to me and try to do the right thing for my further study.
