Hi guys
Currently I am studying in the us and I am a permanent resident. I would like to go to europe for my Phd.
So what do I need to do for that. As you guys know permanent resident cannot go away from the us not more than 6 months. But in this case , is there any provision so that I can stay away from the us more than 6 months. If so what do I have to do? Do i loose my permanent residency or not? Or do I still need to visit in every 6 months?
Honest answer please.
Thanks

I dont know what the purpose of your PhD, if its genuine i dont have a honest answer but if its just for the sake of Dr. infront of your name than there is a way out (you dont need to go to Europe, you can get a European PhD from US)... not online though if you need more info... i can continue the thread

Studying in Europe can be a great experience as far as learning new language and cultures are concerned . Some of the University especially in the Scandinavia does the industrial research so there is get career prospect. If you do PhD in UK , the PhD only last for 3 years so you can earn your degree faster than other places. I am doing a PhD in Europe and there are number of Americans here undergoing PhD. Most of them from very reputed organization like American air force and others. However, make sure your status and residency in US is not affected anyway. You don't want to lose something you already have, do you?

Interesting, either you study in Europe or America, what is the difference, europe is a lot different than USA in every aspect, why you bother to go there, I haven't gone to university but I went to summer school in europe and I finished master's in usa and going phd from jan. I don't see any good reason to go Europe to study, regarding europian universities, it depends on how talent you are, USA is country of research. But it is just my view, I might be wrong.

US universities are far better than Europian Universites. Normally, in US it takes five years but if you compare the quality to the universities of other countries, it is almost five times stronger. If you look world renound journal- like Nature, Science, JACK, Angewandte Chemie, you find most of the article from US Universities. Ph.D. is all about research and publication.
I am also doing Ph.D. in chemistry in USA

@Nabin 72 and others, I find it funny that you guys think US Universities are far better than European Universities. I know that there are some good universities here but please do not underestimate the European Universities. Most of the IVY league universities follow what is called the Heidelberg model , named after the - you guessed it right - the system of education in Heidelberg University. You mentioned the Chemistry Journal Angewandte Chemie.. That name is German! You might also want to know that in the top 10, there are a lot of British Universities like Oxford, Cambridge, University College London, Imperial College London. There is CNRS in France which is one of the most prestigious research institutions in the world. There is Max Planck Institute in Germany. There is DTU - Technical University of Denmark in Denmark. You probably have also heard about ETH Zurich in Switzerland. So please do your research before blatantly pointing out that US Universities are far better than European Universities! I am a PhD student at an American University and I have worked in 2 different European Universities so I know when I am saying that both Europe and the US has pretty awesome universities and some really shitty ones too!

Doing PhD from Europe or US is not a question if you are dedicated and are a good student. One thing I don't like about Nepalese community is "ma chai janne aru sab khattam" type of mentality. It's simple: if you can get into higher ranking schools ... go for it. There are schools in US which might be lower in rankings than UK and UK has schools lower in rankings than the schools in US. If your focus is to get cultural different cultural taste, you can opt for UK schools. Come on guys... you should be able to make decision yourself and get/collect information by your own research rather than finding solutions from Sajha... My view may not be right. .... but just some thoughts !

if you really want councelling about Phd, i would suggest you all to go talk anywhere but here. nothing wrong to share urs brilliant idea but some crazy people happens to leave bullshit comments here which does not fit you all. so get some idea with great people in your college, or better to immigration. and just my little opinion in front of big guns. can u not study abroad like we from nepal if you hold american PR. i mean like study abroad program. i guess u all can do that. just small thought
