Tevez Affirms "Brazil Played Very Well"

After Argentina’s shock 3-0 defeat against Brazil in the Copa America final on Sunday Carlos Tevez told the press that the reason for the result was because “Brazil played very well”.

zoom - galleria Tevez, who couldn’t help Argentina win their first continental title since 1993, affirmed that: “Brazil played very well. But at no moment did a result like this one cross our heads”.

The West Ham striker continued that “Brazil are always like this. We looked to the counterattack to get even but they stood firm. Things didn’t work out and unfortunately we finished without the title in our hands”.

Argentina were completely outplayed and went on to lose their second consecutive Copa America final against the Brazilians after losing out on penalties in 2004.

Lionel Messi should have pulled a goal back for the Argentines late on in the match, but Carlos Amarilla controvesially ruled out his legitimate effort for offside.

In reference to Amarilla’s performance Tevez said: “Today it wasn’t the referee’s fault”.

Tevez was one of few Argentine players that made declarations to the press after the humiliating loss.

Maracaibo - Brazil stunned bitter rivals and overwhelming favourites Argentina 3-0 to win their eighth Copa America title on Sunday.

It was the second successive title for the Brazilians and was sweet justification for coach Dunga, who was without superstars Ronaldinho and Kaka, and who had been the target of vitriolic criticism for overseeing a workmanlike rather than traditionally wondrous side.

Argentina, chasing a record 15th title, were outplayed in every department as the sparkling form they showed in the run-up to the final deserted them and deprived coach Alfio Basile of a second Copa having overseen the team's last win in 1993.

Julio Baptista scored his third goal in three games at the tournament when he gave Brazil the lead after just four minutes.

Baptista scored his third goal in three games
The striker, unwanted by Arsenal, picked up a long ball from Elano, who had replaced suspended skipper Gilberto Silva, and controlled it neatly.

He turned to the right of Argentina skipper Roberto Ayala and fired a fierce right-foot drive into the top corner of Roberto Abbondanzieri's goal.

Five minutes later, Argentina were unfortunate not to be back on level terms.

A cushioned header from Juan Sebastian Veron found Juan Roman Riquelme in space but the playmaker's left-foot shot came off the post with goalkeeper Doni well beaten.

At the other end, Abbondanzieri saved from Maicon to keep the deficit down while opposite number Doni was also alert to danger when he thwarted another Riquelme effort 10 minutes from half-time.

Luck was certainly on Brazil's side and they went 2-0 ahead in the 40th minute when a right-wing cross from substitute Daniel Alves was turned into his own goal by Ayala whose 115th international appearance was slowly turning into a nightmare.

Argentina continued to struggle to make any impact at the start of the second half as the likes of Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi were marked out of the game by well-organised opponents with central defenders Juan and Alex particularly solid.

Brazil earned the reward for their superiority with a memorable third goal after 69 minutes.

Vagner Love broke free down the left and slotted an inch-perfect pass between two defenders where Alves, who plays his club football in Spain with Sevilla, was waiting.

The substitute made no mistake with a low drive into the corner past Abbondanzieri to score his first international goal.

Argentina's miserable night was summed up when Tevez had an 80th-minute effort ruled out for offside.

Brazil victorious in Copa America. I knew Argentina always do choke job. They are not capable of wining any championship. Just too much hype about this team. 3-0 loss. What a shame.
Brazil proved one more time that they are the best team in Latin America.

Well Daaaa? The legendary Dunga is the coach for Brazil man. I was supporting for Argentina since from my childhood have been supporting them, but man that was a disgrace. Bad defence, bad attempts...i guess they lost their magic.

They never had their magic. Since they are averages team, they play well only with bad teams. When time comes and they have to play with some good team, we can see what kind of team they are. Yes they are good team but not one of the best one out there.

First of all, I am a big Brazil fan and I have followed them ever since I knew about football. Having said that, I do not want to be dismissive about the fact that Argentina played a good football in COPA. Just because they lost the final does not mean that we have a right to take away the credit they deserve. Please don't be judgmental or insensitive for that matter.

I read an article about the way current Brazil and Argentina play football in soccernet.com and it was rather interesting and very thoroughly thought over and written article. The gist of that particular article was that Argentina was playing free flowing, attacking game (the way Brazil used to play) where as Brazil opted for tactically balanced, defense first game (the way Argentina used to play) without caring much about the beautiful play they were often associated with and caring only about the end result. THEY SWAPPED THEIR PLAYING STYLES. I thought it was very true up until the final because Argentina were just out of the game yesterday.

I am very happy that Brazil have added yet another trophy to their illustrious career but at the same time, I would like to acknowledge Argentina's superb play which thoroughly entertained spectators which Brazil failed miserably.

Good analysis there, luizronaldo. In contrast to you, I have always been a huge Argentina fan all my life. I echo everything that you have written regarding Brazil and Argentina. It is frustrating to see Argentina leaving Copa America empty handed after their superb performances through out the tournament. But once again, this has been on-going for decades now. Brazil knows how to put an end to the tournament. They have won four out of last five Copa America, handful of confederations cups and world cups in last decade. Argentina, on the other hand, just can’t seem to finish the tournament on their favor. Let’s see when they will land their next championship.

Though it pains to say this but the Argentitans teeam are a bunch of chokers..
Looking at their recent history.. it does show underachievement on every corner..
2002-- they were the FAVS , lost in 1st round
2006- Best team in the tournamanet- Went out to a poor German side..
this copa- went out to a poor Brazilian side...
Last Copa- Lost to a second rated Brazilian side..

They always tend to succumb when playing big matches..
Riquleme sums up how Argentina is...
Brilliant all the way to the final..... FINAL HE Went missing.. like he always does in those big matches..
remember that missed penalty aganst arsenall..
that poor performance agnst Germany...
