Which one is the correct? Nepalese or Nepalis. I have noticed most of the online news use Nepalis for people of Nepal. I am confused,is it alright to use Nepalis instead of Nepalese. How do you describe yourself? I am from Nepal so we are Nepalese or Nepalis. I think like Japanese, Chinese, we are also Nepalese too. But if Nepalis is new version of Nepalese then its all good to roll. There are various ways and names we people from Nepal are known as.Just want to know from others.

Nepali describes the language and people of Khas origin like the Bahun and Chettri, so it would not be correct to describe the whole of people from Nepal as such. Nepalese is better to describe everyone from Nepal because it does not describe any particular group. Just as any other group.

Thank you ne23pe, sounds good to me. Thats what I thought for a while 'Nepalese' is for people of Nepal and Nepali for language and scripts of Nepal. Its a great matter for us. Along a way to modernization we can demolise the word. Its okay among us but not internationally. In an interantional arena we don't use word 'Nepali' for people of Nepal. anyway,

I say both forms of usage are fine. 'Nepalese' is the common way to refer to the inhabitants of a country like Chinese, Japanese, etc. But since Nepali is also an English word referring to an inhabitant of Nepal (you don't have Japani in English), the plural form of that word would be Nepalis. Others may disagree, but I use them interchangeably.

Nepalese is definitely English and Nepali is a Nepali word but for some reason they find it acceptable to call Nepalese Nepali in English. Like Japanese is in English and Japani in Nepali.

As long as we understand it okay to use words interchangeably. We often write short forms and abbr in chats and blogs like this. Is it okay for News papers to adopt this trend? I have noticed nepalnews.com and kantipur online use the word ' Nepali' for people of Nepal. As again, its does not matter for us, we understand it and digest it. How about for international people? Do they undertand what is going on? guess???
