Royalists hiding
Desantar, 30 April

From Issue #296 (05 May 06 - 11 May 06) | TABLE OF CONTENTS
Nepali Times.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many ministers and officials loyal to the king have now gone underground or are hiding inside army barracks. Tulsi Giri, Kamal Thapa, Shrish Shamsher Rana, Bharat Kesar Singh and Satchit Shamsher Rana are on the run. Thapa, who ordered aerial firing against peaceful pro-democracy demonstrators in Kathmandu, has taken refuge at the barracks run by his brother. The Ranas have been hiding at army headquarters since the day after parliament was restored. Singh, who pushed for the king to be called the ‘emperor of the Hindus’, has also been forced to take shelter with the army. Giri was all set to leave for Bangalore as the king was preparing his first national address but was asked to stay back to correct it. That pre-empted his escape and since then he has been staying with the RNA, which moves him around the capital in a car with blackened windows. Several ministers who don’t own houses in Kathmandu have still not left government quarters and many assistant ministers like Pratap Lohar, Harishanker Pariyar and Sonelal Yadab have failed to find houses on rent. Even their sympathisers and supporters have refused to house them after pro-democracy demonstrators made a public appeal for people not to rent to any of these royalists. Tanka Dhakal has not found anyone willing to rent a house to him while former justice and law minister Niranjan Thapa is also taking refuge with the army. None of these ministers have been seen in public. Former assistant minister Bhuwan Pathak, who was responsible for dividing the RPP, has not ventured from his home, royalist Prakash Koirala is reportedly in an unstable mental state and former NC worker Mani Lama stays home cursing the king for destroying his political career. RPP spokesperson Rosan Karki, a well respected RPP member until she joined the king’s government, has also gone into seclusion inside her home in Khumaltar and has broken off ties with her own family. Kesar Bahadur Bista has also not stepped foot outside his home. His party , Democratic National Party reportedly asked him to resign from the royal government and join them while the pro-democracy movement was in full swing. Sadbhabana’s Badri Mandal has also remained underground while Sharad Chandra Shah is living in the barracks. He was chased from the country following the 1990 People’s Movement and returned to support the repressive royal regime after February First. His second wife, Anjana Chakubaji, fled to Singapore the day after the king’s announcement.

Mr. Bathroomcafee, I agree that crooks like khume, wagle n' other should be punished as well. And people are demanding that on the street. But what about so-called royalist governmet. Did they care to punish them during their tenure?

First priority is to punish so-called royalists and then preventing crooks like khume et. al. to get into any active politics and building independent authority like CIAA. But this Upadhyaya needs to be removed first.

Bath,

>Spare no one.

100% with you. I will only add that it is not a sense of revenge that should guide us. A sense of justice and rule of law is what should guide us. Are you up for a decent discussion on that ?

I do have some amateur ideas. But only for a decent and engaging discussion.

King's message seems to have been grasped by most people . . . so much so that few want to go behind political parties and rally against it."

thanks for the link. Interesting view to know even after a year!!

First of all, most of the names out there are not hiding. They are keeping low profile and actually are going out in parties and other social stuffs RE. ( I read it somewhere online )

--- Anyways---

Okay fine, punish those guilty ones by the existing law, if that can actually be implied in practice. But if it is a political decision, that's another matter. It's clear that almost everyone abused, gorged and made mockery of rule of law, human rights, and common sense. But just shouting against those who showed firmness while obeying the higher up/s in the recent uproar, and punishing them will defeat the purpose of the democracy itself, IFF the same treatment is not realized to ALL the political leaders who have also committed immense harm to our nation.

And let's not forget the Maoists and the stigma attached to them. What about their heinous atrocities? Are they to enjoy the luxury of being in the government WITHOUT discarding their weapons and without serving time for their inhumanities? It’s like Mr. Kanak Dixit shouting on the top of his lungs regarding nationalization of ill gotten wealth of others.

With all honesty, it would wonderful if that happens with billions in Nepal government coffers which could be utilized for national use. But wait, what about those who shout on the top of their lungs and point fingers? Excuse me sirs, but what about your “significant property” received in charity? What about mutilation, destruction that amounted to billions by Maoists, what about thousands and thousands of innocent victims losing by their barbaric ideology, what about millions those hundreds of political leaders garnished and what about their work against the national interest?

They talk about punishing policemen, army men, and armed police men. Oh yeah? Fine, do that. Put the culprits in jail. How long? 1 year? 2 years? 5? FINE. After that, those freaking thousands of Maoists and its leaders shall be beheaded in tudikhel. Deal??

And what about those leaders? Maybe their sentence should start from life sentence to torturous life sentence huh? No, they did not mutilate our bodies, but they did however manage to do even worse. They mutilated our souls, our dreams and our future. They made youths like us almost hopeless (thank god hope do not require investment), frustrated, and they amputated our spirits. Don’t you think they deserve their punishment?

Actually even, Gyane/Paras and Gyane’s ministers can join the party here lest there won’t be uniformity.

Is it time to build the system that actually would not let ANYONE abuse their authority or is it time to breed the culture of vengeance? Don’t we have that already? If, people, who have always been appalled and disgusted by barbarism of Maoists, are willing to work together with them for the sake of the nation, are we to breed a culture of revenge? The sole reason people might give their silence acceptance is, at times, something as bad also has to accepted for the greater good.

But what would those with maoists mentality care? When the only tool you have is hammer, every problem do appear as nail eh'?

Mark my words, if this culture of hatred prevails, the cycle of political revolution would become a culture. And whose head is next on the line?

Okay, fcuk that was my impromptu gibberish for whatever it's worth.

And oh yeah, does anyone think that people are with political parties? Fcuk NO. With the Maoists? Yeah right! Not even in their nightmares.

See, King made a mistake thinking that largely silent populace was supporting his coup whereas they were just silently voicing their ire at the political parties and their absolute ineptness. They were just scared of Maoists atrocities escalating to the point of no return. They were tired and frustrated. They were willing to take a chance. Just the way they are taking it now - for lasting peace, rule of law, equality and prosperity.

Let's us not fail now. Let's not make the same mistake again.

In my opinion, there is no moral equivalence between the abuses of power during democracy and the abuses of power by royalists with one notable exception : the abuse of power to amass personal wealth. If money was taken to dole out favors in return, then all people who engaged in such activity, weather during democracy or during the Panchayat or the period of the King's rule should be taken to task. Due process should be established and followed and appropriate punishment to fit the crime must be meted out to *all* culprits.

However, this type of abuse aside, the way the King and those around him have abused power in other forms on a magnitude far greater than the parties before them. Supressing people's right to speak and organize, jailing journalists and opponents of the King, using brute force on unarmed demonstrators are a few examples of such abuses that should not go unpunished.

My 2 cents.

I'm for the punishment of all these culprits. All the committees are made n' nth but the drama. Their recommendations were never implemented either be Rhitik roshan case, Nepalese massacre in Iraq, Mallik Ayog, Nagarkot Massacre. This time, they should get punished. It's not the question of taking the revenge. I'm against physically or verbally abusing the Royalists and those elected in local elections. Royalists are free to have their own party and they're not culrprits. Culrpits are only those who tried to kill innocent people by firing tear gar, bullets at their head; baton-charging; indiscriminate firing at kalanki, gongabu. These are very serious human rights abuse. And if this time, nothing is done, it will happen again n' again.

Obviously, people who came in the streets were not either in the favor or party or maoists; following cartoon depicts that.

Regarding the ill gotten wealth, if we can chart out the map that spares no one, that would excellent.

About supressing people's right, that would be even better if we can punish those human rights abusers. For the sake of being fair, please make sure that Maoists will also get the punishment in proportion to their share okay?

Jailing journalists who oppossed the then govt. should be punished. I hope killing those who oppossed Maoists, should also be met with proportionate punishment. I hope we all can agree in this simple analogy.

In truth, 99% (random number, no research findings to back it up) of all three coetries, could be shot dead for all I care. But my point is, if the law can not treate everyone equally, and punish the culprits in proportion to their crimes, MAYBE, we should first work towards BUILDING that system.

Else, jo aye pani, you scratch my back and I scratch yours - you pat me on the back and I pat yours - philosophy would never cease to be. And the vicious cycle continues.

Baki we have much larger brains at work, waha haru ko jo iccha.

I couldn't find the link where sushil koirala and other leaders were bashed when they visited the victims of Jan Andolan at hospital for hesitating to punish these culprits.

It's not the revenge that all the ministers or all those with faith in king should be punished. It's only those who tortured the people during andolans. They must be punished. And I know some intellectual will come forward putting the pictures of khume, wagle, etal to hide the pictures of culprits.

I understand that all cuprits from all backgrounds ought to be punished. But regarding maoists, they are the worst wild barbarians among all. Agreed on that. But if we expect them to volunteer to be punished only. I wish them getting punished. But they're talking about the peace, and if they can be brought to the mainstream leaving those arms; the issue of punishing prachandas will hinder the peace process. So for the sake of peace, people're being silent over the issue of punishing maoists, and so do I.

I agree with everything Indis Guise has put forth here.

And regarding the level of atrocities and abuse of power committed by each group, I would like to ask who holds the barometer? The group who is in power? Exactly. That is why we need to build a system of law that is fair and equal to everyone. If royalists are to be punished, so should the corrupt party leaders, and inhumane maoists. We cannot let anyone escape punishments that are long due to them.
And using the need of peace and excusing Maoists of the crimes they have committed just shows the lack of fair play which is undemocratic. If their terror can cripple the laws and the ones who implement them, it is high time we change both.

I really enjoy sajha's political threads these days. It is so pleasing to see Mandales getting mad because of the fear of their dear/near ones getting punished for their atrocities. And yes, we need severe punishment to all those royalists and Maoists. Dont compare the corruption by some SPA leaders with the thousands of murders commited by these royalists and maoists. Mandale ra maobadi lai eutai khaldo ma purnu parchha. And they will finish each other

Once Gyane is ousted, I would love to see the images of Gyane captured with long beard like Saddam flashing in all TVs, from Nepal to Nicaragua, from united Kingodm to USA
