Two Nepali girls in New Delhi

Despite being fifth trip to New Delh it was my first visit to India Gate. In school days I used to get confused between India Gate of New Delhi and Gateway of India of Mumbai. Well, after wandering around Palika Bazar and busy streets of Connaught Place I finally caught a bus to India Gate, an enticing monument and the identity of India after Taj Mahal which was made on the memory of Indian soldiers who fought for the country.


What surprises me heavily in Delhi often is the simple yet sophisticated life. Ladies, gentlemen, and the youngsters patiently waiting for the city buses. Dressed in the modest way, "Taxi" like in Kathmandu? No way. No show off, no hip hop, no mini skirt, no cigar nothing else but a mobile in one hand and an English magazine in the other. Sounds great, isn't it? In the city buses of Delhi do not expect a conductor to come and ask for a ticket, you must go and help yourself. But it is pretty common to find many Delhities trying hard to play a tricky game. Clever enough.

"India Gate...India Gate............." shouted a conductor in the hoarse voice. I got off pushing and shoving the crowd. In fact, I was greatly delirious to see it all with my naked eyes. The moment I got off from bus I flustered for a while as magnificent Rashtrapati Bhawan was on my right side whereas India Gate was beckoning from the other side. Interestingly I moved towards Rashtrapati Bhawan and a farcical temptation ran into my mind, whether I could get a glimpse of APJ Abdul Kalam, really I was foolish. Then I went to Parliament building and lamented for while where recalling event of 13th Dec happened. Meanwhile I pondered myself staring at building," Is this the ultimate destination of all the politicians, who are playing a game called politics just to get a berth here?" Anyway I felt great to be there.

Phew!! The best of stories I've ever read of you Amazing!! Very touching..I'd been to South India once- but never looked at things differently. I just went to beautiful places, roamed around and mostly felt like an alien- people staring at me like i'm from a different planet- I always had to be consciously thinking whenever I spoke to someone on the street. Delhi could be different. But a very nice depiction of life in Delhi. Kudos to you! :) And I know India hosts the largest population of Nepalese than anywhere else in the world, but I truly would like to see how it is for Nepalese to live life there- I still can't believe you find Nepali girls roaming around for survival like that in India!!

tara its only small example, there are hundred of thousands Pinkies n Blues in Calcutta, Mumbai, Gorakhpur and everywhere but we could do nothing.....just see Khai ta maile kehi garna sakina.

tara we dont' have to t go to delhi or anywhere else in the world to find nepali women selling themselves for one scrap of meal. you come out in kathamndu and right there in front of your eyes, you are going to see women, some with children in 20s, searching desperately for cleints....right in the middle of the day!!

It is a reality check. There are many women like pinki and blues in India, in kathmandu. We can feel sorry for 'em or do something to help 'em. One thing we could do is contribute financially by donating organization like Maiti Nepal. That will be small indirect help but it is some sort of help.

helping sex workers is actually much much more complicated than we make it to be. the money taht is donated to organization maiti nepal goes towards making these women indepedent. they get training in various skills, like silai bunai etc. tara the thing is they will never make as much money by just making stuff, . from our point of view, this idea sounds great. hey noww they dont' have to work as prostitutes anymore!!
but the money they make by doing something else will never be enough to pay rent, pay school fees, buy food utilties etc. so these women go right back to wehre they had started. its a very nice thought you have, tara we have be realistic in how to help htese women. giving them high-profile jobs they aht pay enough moeny is not pratical because they dont' have the necessary education or technical knowledge. so its like a vicious cycle.
the solution prostituion/sex work is incrediblty difficulte to come up with.

I agree that there is no simple solution to this issue. I am not trying to make it simple by suggesting an option to contribute. This could be one of the many ways. I understand that there is no definitive way to tackle it. However it is in work in progress. We need as many heads as possible to come up creative solutions keeping in mind the factors such as illiteracy, income and expenses. Maiti Nepal and other organizations are in the front line contributing, we can contribute little from wherever we are. It is not enough but better than doing nothing. Don’t you think?
This is one option I could think of. Others can come up with more creative and effective ones.

i am not trying to sound haughty or anything tara senior year of high school i had to do this extensive, year long reseaarch of sex workers of kathamdnu. so i know exactly wehre the loopholes are of trying to help them out. all right you said helping out a little. ..say $100. if that moeny goes twoards making them get into other occuptions like silai bunai, then they are only going to back to this profession because they are not going to make enough moeny to survive...!!!!! so they will be right back wehre they started. so your money is not being utilized. its not helping!! i talked to women who told me that once you get into this profession, its hard to get out becasue only by doing sex work, they make enough money to sustain themselves. well, can you blame them??

maitii nepal is a great organization trying to help sex workers, but the problem is they think these women should be trained do something else. but that's the problem. they are not being practicalllll!!!!!!
in the short term, teh best way to handle is not to be judgemental about them, udnerstand their position and educate them about safe sex

the long term solution is udnerstand that we will never be able to get rid of prositituion, but we can lessen its extent through empowerment of women, emphasis on education of women all over the country so that women have a choice.

I agree with you that the important thing is the empowerment of women through education, awarness and opportunities all over the country. This will produce some effective result in long term. I am still thinking of the ways to contribute at the moment. Safe sex awareness is one. What about the women who do not want to be in the business anymore and want to be able to survive? How could we help?

very very few women involved in this business (at least in countires like nepal) do it because of choice. they do it not becasue they want to continue the business but because there is no altnerative for them. that's a good question you asked how we can help them. see we cannot provide them proficeint jobs with good enough moeny because theyy are not skilled enough (if they were, why would they become prostitutes in teh first place?).
i think one of the best ways to help them is try to break the cycle for future generations. funding the education of thier girl children so that when these girls grow up, they are not faced wi th the same circumstances. we can also invest in educationg these women about safe sex and demanding their rigths (recently, sex workers have actually come out in public media and talked about thier experinces and what they expect from teh state). many INGOs trained them and educated them in this process. see this is something effective and worthwhile. training these women to sew clothes and expect them to live on 2000/- per month is not.

Perhaps we have to find out root causes of trafficking that embraces poverty, ignorance, and patriarchal attitude towards daughters. As it has been rightly said that prevention is better than cure, we have to uproot the root causes through education, employment, and awareness. And for those who have been rescued from the brothels should get trainigns and education for their socio-economic empowerment. Eventually, laws and policies on trafficking should be revised so that justice should speak on behalf of survivors not culprits.

We need more NGOs and INGOs to work against trafficking, only Maiti Nepal and some other organizations are not enought to curb the trafficking effectively.
