The latest issues of NEPAL newsweekly has a two-page report (p 46-47) on love-starved Maoists. According to the report: a) As a Maoist, if you love somebody, you have to seek the party's approval to proceed further in your romance. b) If the party sees a good 'fit' between you and love interest, it then arranges your marriage. c) Because of party's various [nation-building] activities that involve a lot of travelling, Maoist husbands and wives -- even newly-wedded ones -- may not meet one another for long stretches of time. Duties to the party come first before duties to your spouse. d) The party has issued an order to all couples NOT to have children for the first five years. [Children apparently pose a burden to the party.] e) Maoist females marry Maoist comrades, not non-Maoist guys. f) The party urges its comrades to repress their sexual urges to serve the greater cause of Janayudda. g) What do the Maoists think about homosexuality? The report does not say. h) If you are a jilted lover who is also a Maoist, you can file a charge, and the party, after judicious deliberations, will have your ex-lover sentenced to "Labor Camps". **** Anyway, the details above -- and I am NOT making them up -- give the rest of us a sense of the world we in Nepal WILL live in under the watchful eye of the Party, should Maoism come to pass in Nepal. The Party's aim, of course, is to make our life "easier" by making ALL our personal decisions on our behalf in the name of some greater good. Maybe the Maoists should have a "Department of Love Affairs" to legislate and enforce love-related laws. oohi "Trying to fall in love and get married BEFORE the Maoists come to power" :-) ashu ktm, nepal

Don't fall in love, don't get married, don't get bugged down. Why settle for one when you can have garden varieties.

Interesting piece of info. Ashu! "Dept. of Love Affairs" --- now THAT sounds like a necessity, Maoism or no Maoism! :)

Dunno why K P Bhattarai didn't join Maoists in Rukum. He used to say: "Gai Napaali dudh khaana Payinchha bhane, Kina Gai Paalne?" This should be the slogan of Maoists.

It's great that a number of you found the first posting above (a summary of a report published in NEPAL newsweekly) interesting and amusing. One in a while , time-permitting, I'll be sharing interesting tidbits from Nepal, as I have done for the past several years on Sajha. To those, who see no humor and derive no amusement from such a posting, and instead use it to FALSELY attack me (directly or indirectly), all I can say is: Lighten up, guys. All that's needed here is a sense of humor!! oohi ashu

ashu, thanks for the news. i have been a lurker at sajha for sometime and always enjoy your updates from Nepal. also i look forward to your column at nepali times. yeah it does give you the chills that the choice of love and marriage would have to be approved by the Maoists when and if their janayudhya is successful. "If the party sees a good 'fit' between you and love interest, it then arranges your marriage." i wonder how they decide if one is fit for another. hitler liked to use the same theory but used the race card instead. if maoists don the role of matchmakers, they might learn to use the personality and physical attraction profiles used by internet dating services like match.com or e-harmony.com. that would be something, wouldn't it? btw, the title of this thread reminded me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's classic " Love In the time of Cholera." i have not read that but i will once i finish " One hundred years of Solitude." keep us posted. mG.

Hehe that article was funny. Its pathetic though to arrange lop like that between the party members. And about that jilted lover thing, what to say besides that I feel soory for them. Hope maoists NEVER reigns in Nepal though I don't like the king any better, the political leaders are even worst. This is my personal opinion and I do not want any Sajhhites political activist attacking me!!
