One of My friend graduated in Dec 2008..He applied for  OPT card and received the OPT card but the start date and the end date was incorrect.Start date was Jan 05,2008 and end date was Jan 04 2009.His start date on I-20 is Jan 05 2009 and end date is jan 04 2010..He has a job in hand and don't know what to do.called USCIS and they told him to submit I765 form and his orginal OPT card .My question is can he work legally from jan 05 2009 as stated in his I20? Note that OPT was approved but with wrong date? Help needed desperately..

Well i don't think that he would have any problem at all because he got an I-20 with Valid OPT Period. Its just a matter of wrong date placed in his OPT card. If he is working as a contractor(Through consultancies), he even don't have to worry about it. However if he is employed directly, just show them the I-20 if they asked it for work autorization. IF somebody mention about OPT card just tell them he is waiting for it..

But be sure to get another OPT card with correct dates...

He has already sent the documents to the USICS so that they can correct it..Normally the processing time is 90 days and i had googled similar cases and the results have been varying, some people got the correct card withing 10 days and for some it took months..I20 has the requested OPT start and end date..

OPTs are only for 1 year unless you go thru e-verification process
