Brahmin switches caste to bag Dalit scholarship

Baglung, June 9: A Brahmin student here forged documents to bag an Indian embassy scholarship reserved for Dalit students to study MBBS. Shanker Gautam of Singana VDC-4 changed his surname to Bishwokarma, a surname commonly used by Dalits, in the forged documents. Pro-Dalit organisations here protested the allocation of the seat meant for Dalit students to a non-Dalit. Amid a press conference they demanded the concerned bodies to revoke the scholarship and provide it to a genuine Dalit student. VDC secretary Lal Bahadur KC recommended that Shankar was from a Dalit family. KC, however, claimed that he only certified Gautam family’s income and recommended scholarship for him based on his poverty. However, chairman of the commission Ram Lal BK said the VDC’s letter clearly mentioned Shankar as a Dalit. Central general secretary of the commission Chakra Man Bishwokarma said Gautam managed to get a seat to study MBBS out of the four seats reserved for Dalits. Genuine Dalit candidate, Raj Kumar BK of Bardia, who is from a landless family, was deprived of the opportunity because of Gautam, as BK fell 0.5 points behind Gautam in the ranking. Coordinator of the Network of Oppressed Communities Govinda Nepali said a fraud case would be filed against KC for forging documents for Gautam. Assistant CDO Ram Bahadur Nepali said the case would be probed and the guilty punished.

 

 

First let's have rule where we can say " may the best man win". Let us give equal opportunity to everyone. This quota system in various categories itself is discriminatory. It would be reasonable( not ideal) to have quota system upto high school (+2) level, after that you should earn any scholarships truely based on your talent not based upon  any caste and gender! Dalit may not agree, but this kind of quota system will make them always dalit! coz they do not want to be non dalit as long as they get privilege of being dalit!

If such things " quota" system continues, no wonder there are hell lot of deprived people from bramin and chettri  or non dalit communities, who would be compelled to do this sort of things, and it will happen frequently. What to say..this is NEW NEPAL!

JPT vancha yr.. timi pani quota ko lagi try garne vani baseko kya.Besides, these kinds of quotas are given to dalits so that they can uplift themselves in this society.

Borama halchu! you need to have broader understanding of social issues to understand what am I implying. Your shallow brain power would not understand such things, looks like that is beyond your capacity. Anyway for your wisdom, let me say something..

1. how do you define someone is dalit or  not?- just from the caste system??? if so, then who is dalit " a bramhin or chetri living in rolpa rukum or a " dalit caste" having property in Kathmandu or some metropolitan area?

SON, it is not the caste which we should consider it is the economical condition which you should focus on! I condem any " dalit caste" who has decent living gets into the quota system and any non dalit who is poor, is left behind! got my point you thick head!

First of all this scholorship is not given my Nepal Government, it is Indian Enbassy scholorship and i do feel that guy should be punished for lying and forging his documents.

This is an utterly great shame.
First of all, Mr. Shankar Gautam's scholarship should be revoked. He and Mr. Lal Bahadur KC should be tried in the court of Law and sent to where they belong i.e. the jail.

The governing body which oversees the scholarship award should send formal apology to the Indian Embassy and Indian  medical college indicating that it was a grave mistake and such conduct shall not take place in future so as not to lose this generosity for the future applicants.

Dalits have been down-trodden by the elite ruling class for thousands of years . They, in general, have relatively lower chance of upward mobility in the society.
If the applicant dalits are the ones
"having property in Kathmandu or some metropolitan area",
then they should NOT be entitled to this scholarship or any other similar scholarships.
But who, in the right mind, would go and live in Singana VDC-4 in Baglung if they had a big house in a major city?

exactly you got the point my.hyde, even if they have properties in metropolitan area, as long as this kind of reservation system is there, both dalit and non dalit would continue to exploit the system to their favor. Dalit being " rich" would argue they are dalit, and non dalit " whe are poor" would argue they are deprived.

If you really want to empower dalit or poor class, give them education upto 12th standard and let them fight thereafter on thier own! 

In the name so called fair representaion let us not do injustice to those who are deserving people! It is unfair!

This defeats the whole quota system designed to help the minorities. Imagine what would happen if white people painted their face black to get in on the Affirmative Action ?

This Gautam guy should be jailed for fraud(falsyfying identification) instead of scholarship. and Mr. KC should be fired for not doing his job properly. And the scholarship should goto the rightful owner Raj kumar BK.

The Nepali Government should intervene in this matter if hey want to start their governance on the right note.
