This is what I got in email today. Guys who are interested in the development of Nepal, grab this opportunity.

NRN Youth Forum and Nepalese Young Entrepreneur's Forum (NYEF) is launching a professional networking platform called Development Salon. First event is a talk program on December 30th at FNCCI Hall on "ICT for Rural Development of Nepal". It will be presented by a young Nepali researcher from IIT Madras, Pradeep Ghimirey. NRN Youth Forum and NYEF welcomes interested people to attend the event.

TOPIC

"ICT for Rural Development of Nepal"

Discussion on wireless technologies and various business models in India. What can Nepal learn from India's experience?

Presentor Pradeep Ghimirey
Project Associate, Rural Technology and Business Incubator, IIT

Date: Sunday, December 30, 2007
Time: 3:00pm - 5:00pm
Location: FNCCI Hall
Street: Tripureshwar
City/Town: Kathmandu

What he says:

My organization Rural Technology and Business Incubator comes under Telecommunication and Networking Research Group(TeNeT), IIT Madras. (www.tenet.res.in) TeNeT group has incubated around 30 technology companies which mainly aim towards developing low cost solutions to extend the reach of modern technology to the rural areas.

Some examples :

1. Low Cost Rural ATM`s ( around INR 80000 )
2. Telemedicine Kits ( around INR 15000)
3. Thin client PCs ( $100)

There is lot of potential market for these products in Nepal where cost is a major barrier. I am keen on exploring the possibilities of marketing these products in Nepal if any agencies are interested in the venture.

Currently I am working on a project on Wireless Mesh Networks which aims to develop a low cost wireless mesh solution which will deliver 1Mbps /connection. Also we are involved in supporting Rural Computer Kiosks by delivering online services in the field of education, health, agriculture , vocational training and financial services to rural communities.Lot of work is currently being done in creating local contents tailor made for the needs of rural communities.

I am also interested in having these practices initiated in Nepal. I think Magsaysay Awardee Mahabir Pun has done a commendable job in this area. There are lot of organisations involved in ICT based development practices in India. We can always benefit from the best practices available. I have kept my options open as i want to understand the areas in which i can work effectively.
