it is very hard to change J1 to F1. You can try but it's near impossible. It was easier about 15 years ago. Just to extend the J1 you have to go back to your home country because the two year rule applies.

Nepalny, If you want to go to school, you can continue as an exchange student. You don't have to change your visa type to F1. But you have to be accepted under the university's J1 program. I would suggest you to go and see the ISO of the university you want to get admitted. They will guide you. Your two year home residensy obligation may be deferred once you are accepted. However, you will still be obliged to do it but later. Hope it helps Good luck

Thanks u guys. Very recently, I heard that U can go to school with J-1 Visa. The ISO of the new school will do everything. What we have 2 do is find a school and get admitted n ask help from ISO. But there will be still 2 year home country requirement which we have 2 fulfill later. Last edited: 03-Oct-07 11:48 AM

Once on J-1 (subject to the two year requirement) is going to hunt you for ever unless you fulfill the requirement however you can apply for a waiver if you would like to change your status in the US. J-1 can go back to Nepal and come back on an F-1 status but cannot change to H-1B without getting an waiver. In order to get a waiver you would have to get an apporval from the home country then apply to DHS. If you need more info. then you can email me.
