Folks,

I am thinking of sending a nice cell phone set from USA to my relative in Nepal. But i am not sure if the cell sets in USA work in Nepal.

Any body can advise on it?

You can find unlocked Quad-band phones in ebay or any wholesale stores.

Basically, you can unlock the phone in 2 ways:
First, you can buy a software online from ebay for $9.99 and they will provide you the unlock codes and the process of how to unlock your phones manually.

Second,you can go to any wholesale phone store in your city and they can unlock that for you and i am pretty sure it shud not be more than $5.

I had the blackberry phone from Nextel like 8 months back and when i took that phone to Nepal it did not work at all. I just wasted my money buying the sim card and service in Nepal. But i heard that the new Nextel Blackberry phones are compatible and can be used in many countries ( I am not sure-may be a rumor) lemme know the model number of the blackberry you are talking about and i can find it out whether it is gonna work in nepal or not.

i have motorola v330 quad band fone from tmobile.. do i have to unlock it? according to Nepaligurl it doesnt need to be unlocked.. i have already unlocked Sony Ericsson from tmobile this year.. will they allow me to unlock another fone??

Motorola V330 is a Quad-band phone so you dont have to unlock it..You can take it to Nepal and put the sim card and it will work in 900 Mhz...

And you dont have to call Tmobile to unlock the phone..You can lock your phone more than 1000 times in a year and it has nothing to do with the service provider..

The phone that you are using now Blackberry 7520 is not compatible and you cannot use that phone in Nepal...

The real deal is..you have sexier cell phones in nepal. people will laugh at you if you show them the cell phones u get it in US. Myan! and we thought US were more technologically advanced.

Nepaligurl you r wrong ,i bought Motorola V3 quad band phone last week and its locked i even tried to use cingular's sim card and its askin me for subsidy code that means its locked.You can't use it anywhere unless its unlocked.

If someone could list the phones that uses quad technology and does not need 'unlocking' trhat would be very helpful to people like me going to Nepal in a few weeks., and planning on taking cellphone from here. Thanks.

Last time when I was in Nepal , I took my cell phone with me. At that time I was not aware of any of the cell lingos-locking, quad band, TMDA etc. I was naive enough to think that since it was a cell phone, it would work. Well, it did not.

I was surpeised to see that most of my friends and relatives carried cell phones which looked way nicer than mine. I got mine free when I signed for 2 yr contract (it was around 250$ at that time). But in Nepal, every body paid in HARD CASH. I could not believe folks spent as much as three months' salary to buy a phone set. No wonder, they had sexy-thin sleek flip phones. To make it worse, cell phone was such a topic of conversation. I felt like dumb when I was exposed to their enormous knowledge of cell phone models and functions.

Next time I go to Nepal, I aint gonna repeat the mistake. I aint showing my phone to nobody.

only 900 Mhz frequencies phone are capable for Asian countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan etc..??????????

well, here is my saying

CELL phones
in nepal there is  both CDMA and GSM  netowks.

if you look for CDMA cell phones, telecom has CDMA 2000, 1x technology with 800MHz frequency band.


I guess you are up for GSM sets.

nepal Telecom  uses two frequency band. 900MHz and 1800 MHz. So phones with  only 1800 MHz band also work. but you may find problem coz telecom has a combined network of both bands. still only 1800 freq. band phones work.

and, In major areas of ktm valley, telecom provides WCDMA technology  i.e. 3G services. so 3G phones  do work provided you own a 3G sim.

PS. you can surf internet from 71 districts of nepal, with your laptop  having sufficient battery life@ a max connection speed of 153.6 kbps. wirelessly...!!!!!

Now about locking of cell phones,

generally, cell phones sets that you bring from country like USA are locked by the network operator.
but here in ktm, sab kuch chalta hai...
you can find mobile repair centers, who will crack those  unlock codes and make your phone free. i don't know their range. but most of them gets the phone unlocked.

they own some unlocking devices for different brand and they have their own subroutine!!
you can also spend time, if you have, in the internet forums talking about how to crack the sets, change the firmware, or know the different codes.it depends on the your time you devout, luck  and many more.

so, first confirm which phone set you are going to buy for NEPAL.
single band, dual band and tri band phones easily work in nepal . ( ie. 800/1800/2100 MHz, in Nepal Telecom)
you can easily ask the customer care dept of the network operator of your phone( in usa, of whose SIM u are using) about the lock status of your phone. there no reason not to answer for that. and get help from some frens in ktm, to visit the repair centres asking if the phone can be unlocked!! they can , i guess...

Someone told me they take around Rs1000 in Nepal to unlock a mobile phone.

 i don't know their feee..
but round bout  is like you have said daz ji. but i suggest to go through the internet to unlock. many set unlocking related forums are available for a  particular brand and model. and if you don't have time. a cost of round 1000 is reasonable...
