TI report

NEW DELHI: Transparency International (TI) on Tuesday said corruption in India has come down over the last one year. The TI?s Corruption Perception Index, 2005, has placed India at the 88th position among 159 nations, down by two ranks from last year. Pakistan has been placed at the 144th position.

Berlin-based TI has placed China and Sri Lanka at the 78th position while Afghanistan and Nepal share the 117th rank. Myanmar is placed at 155th position. Iceland is the least corrupt country while Bangladesh and Chad are the most corrupt, the report says. The United Kingdom has been placed 11th with Netherlands while United States has been placed at the 17th position.

The survey not only deals with petty corruption but also ranks public services and states. ?The study also looks into systematic aspects of corruption in public services,? Transparency International India?s working chairman S D Sharma said. ? PTI

No Nepali who is wishing good of his/her country is happy to see Nepal being high on the list corrupt countries.

However, is it fair to say that over 70% of the population are not involved in corruption but they are victims of the corruptions perpetuated by the politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen and their pimps, day in and day out?

What is hard to digest is that Switzerland is among the least corrupt countries. All the ill gotten wealth is said to be kept safely in the Swiss Banks. Would the Swiss Banks disclose the accounts and their deposits from Nepal in the last 60 years?

What kind of standard is this where the secret accounts and secret deposits continue in the Swiss Banks (and elsewhere too) and those who deposit the monies by snatching from the mouths of hungry, poor and sick think that their money is safe and the banks happily use the monies so deposited. What an irony??

Isn't the keeper of the money is also equally corrupt?

If the Swiss Banks were to disclose the individual accounts and deposits from last 60 years from Nepal, this will create a political bhukampa equivalent of 9.9 rector scale with its epicenter in Kathmandu.

Our leaders never raise this issue because they know ---lahara tanda pahara garjine...
