What's practical use of Nepal Sambat? We already using Bikram Sambat and partly Gregorian Calendar. Already it being "KHICHADI", due to some offical documents are in Birkram Sambat some are in Gregorian Calendar(Isbi Sambat).
Mostly all countries are using only one calendar: Gregorian calendar for standard. I know, South Korea also used Lundar calendar few years before but now they only use Isbi Sambat as offical calendar..........

I am not here to oppose for Nepal Sambat, may it has its own value...............

Give your own input for this matter..............................

Happy Tihar 2061 B.S.

Exactly when did Nepal started to use B.S. and I.S. predominantly ? I don?t know. Nepal Sambat was used in practice up until one Rana prime minister (I believe it was Chandra Shamsher). He was actively trying to eliminate the use of Nepal Sambat and some other heritage of Kathmandu. Some of the old deeds (laalpurja) of our ancestral lands of Gonga bu and Sitapaila (near Swoyembhu) still have dates written in Nepal Sambat. They were from Rana time before Nepal Sambat was phased out officially. Household use of the Nepal Sambat still continued however for a long time.
Now, when did the Iswi San entered Nepal ? Probably after the Rana regime was gone. It wasn?t widely used as it is now even as early as 1970s. So just because the world uses Iswi San doesn?t mean you have to drop all the things that you were using for centuries. Some old storeowners of Kathmandu valley still keep their books in Nepal Sambat. For some it is a cultural relic, for some it is still part of the day to day work. Cultural value is a big part of your identity too. With your argument, we all should just forget using Devnagari and use Roman alphabet instead to make it very uniform and easy for people like you. Just use a simple add 57 to convert to B.S. or subtract 880 to convert to Nepal Sambat. I am sure your mathematical ability surpasses simple addition and subtractions.
I, for one, don?t care what Korea does.
And one more thing. When Nepal joined UN, Mahendra (then King) had submitted pali language, Newar lipi and Nepal sambat. I didn?t understand the purpose of this though.

Cotton Silk Wool,

It does not harm to do some research before posting. There are some factual errors in your post:

1. Before Bikram Sambat became our official Sambat, we used Saka Sambat, not Nepal Sambat.

2. No, Mahendra and BP-Team did not submit Nepal Sambat, Pali, and Newari as our official date, script and language when joining the UN on 14 Dec. 1955. This rather weak argument has been used time and again by the advocates of Nepal Sambat.

There are disputes regarding Nepal Sambat. In some documents, it is regarded as Maha Chin Sambat. Precisely for this reason, Nepal's historians, even those who belong to the group that celebrates Nepal Sambat such as Dhana Bajra bajracharya, never directly advocated in favor of Nepal Sambat. During the 2030s decade, there was a proxy war on Nepal's print media between the people for and against the Nepal Sambat. This has been chronicled by historian Mahesh Chandra Regmi in his monograph, Nepal Sambat ko Anauchitya Ko Sambandha Ma.

It is true that some old merchants of Kathmandu Valley keep their books on Nepal Sambat. But it is only in the valley. In Tarai region, they use Janak Sambat. You move further north, they use Buddha Sambat. We have many Sambats in Nepal. If we make Nepal Sambat our official Sambat, then it will only favor the valley's majority. So instead of seeking recognition as an official Sambat by politicizing the issue, let's just celebrate it. Look at the the other side of politicizing the ethnic/cultural things: Nepal will soon be divided into Sambats/languages/cultures/groups, and that's going to prove disastrous to our already politically divided nation.

Dear friends,
The Gurung Community celebrate Ney Year during their Lhosar festival.
Lho=Year, Sar = Change
They have their own calendar.

Similary Thakali may have their own.

In actual practice we must promote all of them rather discussiong about replacing Bikram Sambat into others.

All of them have their cultural value it never means that we must forget them.
We have used Bikaram Sambat as our official Calendar what is wrong with it then?
Do we have to copy Koreans?
Do we have to be centralized in small community in kathmandu?

pls do not politicize it !

Shoot- I committed a factual error myself.

Please read " This has been chronicled by historian Mahesh Chandra Regmi in his monograph, Nepal Sambat ko Anauchitya Ko Sambandha Ma. "

as

This has been chronicled by historian Mahesh Raj Pant in his monograph, Nepal Sambat ko Anauchitya Ko Sambandha Ma.

How long we are going to preserve our culture, old tradition? Time and space will tell us! After boarding international plane in TIA, we are going to loose many of these things...........
So, many of our culture and tradition may only good to display in museum.....things look to controversial.......... many reform need in our country to change our typical nepali-pan.........

I see no practical use of Nepal Sambat, because it was only common in Kathmandu as many of you have pointed out by mentioning the lalpurja, and other things. But they are our cultural things specific to certain group of people only. I agree to keep the culture alive we need to practise it, but not to the extent of segretating Nepali people. BS has been going pretty well, I have heard no complains about it, if I am mistaken do correct me. When one system is running smoothly I see no reason why it should be changed. As as being from a newar community myself, I would like to question how many of Newari people even know how to speak proper newari, how many of us know how to write in Newari language. So if you really want to preserve the culture I guess its better preserved in terms of language and lipi rather than just a date which other nepali people are not easy with. I also bet even if it were made official with BS as official, it would be very few people who use it. And also for official purposes you would want something that everybody is easy using it. I would advocate for newari language to be offered as an optional subject in colleges as a part of plan to save the newari culture rather than try to make Nepal Sambat official.
What do u think?

Isolated_Freak, you make us proud. Thanks for the info and extensive research.

I agree with the common consensus; lets not make a political agenda out of it. Celebrate it and preserve it.

There is nothing wrong in theory with Nepal Sambat vis-a-vis Bikram Sambat! Both work on parallel principals. However, it does not matter how traditional something is it is bound to face competition from other contemporary counterparts. Bikram Sambat broght in a challenge to Nepal Sambat with vigour: Nepal Sambat is based upon the moon's positions arond the earth like many other lunar calendars; Bikram Sambat as we know today is a solar calendar. When you adjust the solar calendar to align with the position of the earth against the Sun, you do so by adding a day every four years whereas you add a whole month in the lunar calendar for the same purpose. The reason is, the granularity of the soalr system is much more precise, so to say, than that of the lunar system. You can see the sun every ~12 hours with almost no difference in the phases of the Sun versus every ~15 days, with differences in phases of the moon every day.

In this world all lunar calendars are slowly vanishing. On the other hand, Bikram Sambat is itself facing stiff competition from the Gregorian calendar. You want it or not, we are on the verge of giving up both of our national heritages! So now the debate is not Bikram Sambat versus Nepal Sambat, but 1969 versus 2025!

Do not forget our tithis are still based upon a lunar calendar.

If you are a computer wizard, probably you have felt that the decimal system is no match for the hexadecimal system. Just like any number can be represented using the decimal system so can be using the hexadecimal system(it might take another 5000 yrs, though, for the hex to take over). The parallels are very similar to our calendars.

Would I be surprised if one day the good old reliable decimal system becomes a history!
By the way the decimal system for that matter modern arithmetic is borne by our ancestors (meaning from the Indian subcontinent). But when times come you have to say bye-bye!

views today:

granted that we have been using BS for some time now...and as some of you readers brought out the cutural and tradition part of it...its time for a change....
like there was no point in having to work on sunday( like we did in nepal) when the rest of the world sleeps.
this BS thing also doesn't make sense.....and needs to be changed... you have ur passport in English calendar but ur "nagrikta" in BS and the ur SLC in Engish calendar and then ur half the banks are still using BS and the others have moved on and started using English calendar and then u have half the comapines using the AD and the goverment still using BS and then......u get idea of what i'm trying to tell....

for all you holding on to tradition and culture......"Sanskrit"..know whats happening with it...its on its last gasp and will die.......,...and so will BS.........why wait.....
