I always get this huge temptation to write when there is some politican “uthalputhal’ in Nepal. Call me critical or politically inclined I have my own say for the much talked Modi visit to Nepal.

Couple of months back when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India, I had written a thread about how he has his agenda’s set and what all he did for the state of Gujarat when he was the Chief Minister. Even then also I said this is a man of agendas and ambition. Having such a visionary leader, India still has a lot of problems to be solved. It is not a days or a week’s work that it will drastically change and all the problems are solved.

Similarly when he was in Nepal, he made sure that his presence is felt in a positive way. Trust me, this guy is very smart. He did his home work thoroughly and indeed I am impressed. He is the first dignitary to address the House of Parliament of Nepal, after the restoration of Democracy in Nepal. It is definitely very flattering to see him address the house in Nepal, and all the MPs and the crowd watching the live telecast were wowed when he started his speech in Nepali. But how many of us have questioned the agenda behind it?

Is he trying to impress and woe the people of Nepal? Is he really a friend to Nepal? What will India benefit from this visit? He said he is not only going to generate electricity but also buy it from Nepal and not take it for free, is there any hidden clauses that we don’t see? There are a lot of unanswered questions buzzing around.

I see a sudden change in attitude of most of the Nepali people. Suddenly they have this soft corner for the Indians. Dhoti term has changed into Friend. Honestly it will only take another statement by one of the Indian people and then we will have all bandhs and hadtals in the protest of it. Going a little deeper, it looks like a big brother giving lollipop to his younger sibling and taking away his toys and stuff. And this younger brother is happy with the lollipop.

No I am not being cynical but just analysis which our politicians lack at times. Even their own advisors (baristha Sallakars) can see it but I guess in a long term there is not much Nepal can do on its own. If he is man of his words and gives the support of 10000 crores and buys the electricity from Nepal, hopefully we will be progressing on the footsteps of Bhutan.

By the way the funny part is , Mr. Prime Minister of India had promised so much, and had given so much of sugar talks and there is this bunch of people who could only hear Buddha was born in Nepal CONFIRMED and argue on the fact that Nepal is not a state of India….How insecure can we get than this??

We can change our friends\girl friends if we don't like them any more; But we can't change our neighbors. We have to work with them.

If India is coming to the realization that it cannot achieve its foreign policy goals by interferring in the internal affairs of neighbouring countries so arrogantly as it has done in the past, that would be a welcome start. It certainly looks as if Modi is much different than his predecessors. We should give him the benefit of doubt. He is the first prime minister to visit Nepal in 17 years and declared mending the relationship with the neighbours as his main foreign policy agenda. He seems to be a man of his words if you look at his track record. He is a man with some vision. He can see that India can achive its regional security goals only if it builds some credibility among the neighbours. He is helping us to help India. Only time will tell how it will play out. Having Gandhis in charge of Inida would make us much worse off.

dhoti is called for reason not just for appearance and you were somehow brilliant to question his motive better than most sheeple nepalis ( i think they were overwhelmed  with Indian PM  acknowledging " buddha was born in nepal") in that historical moment. of-course he doesn't want free electricity (who would give him free these days in this global market duh!!) but this is what I wanted to shriek when everybody was praising him and now somehow coming true when you analyse the demands to lift current economic blockade. sorry it's in nepali I hope u can read it ; http://kantipur.ekantipur.com/news/2015-10-06/20151006082009.html

Precisely, that is what i think too. Had nepalese leaders displayed their solidarity in international front and acted on behalf of national interest rather than making delhi visits to lick the shit out of dhoti asses to prove their loyalty in hope of winning indian favor in the power play in nepal, this day would have never come.

On this day and age every big fish country is looking for its own interest. China appears eager to help nepal because it is a goos opportunity for china to slap back on india. Otherwise china would not give a shit. Look at the human rights records within china itself, not that india is any better.

Its similar to what happened in crimea, only to a lesser degree. All the world's elite and powerful nations kept whining while russia did what it did. Had crimea been of a major interest to any of these nations like kuwait was back in 80s, russia wud have been in deep shit by now.

No one is going to come to rescue nepal out of this crap without some self interest. I feel like wtf when i see that people are now beginning to consider china as what they used to consider india in the past.

Nepal needs to grow its own backbone. That is the only way to earn some respect amidst the two superpower neighboring nations, not by joggling between them for favors.

Nepal needs to grow out of tales of buddhas birthplace and land of braves. Battles are no longer fought with khukuris. It is the day of technology.

I have been advocating on hydro power and solar power for a long time....these are what nature has given us...its not someone's property but a gift Nepal has got...i look at European countries using their wind as a source of energy and I goooo WOW....DIMAG!!!!!
Look at Bhutan in past 10 years....where it is now....it is landlock just like Nepal.....same terrain....same problems....same resources...Now it sells electricity to India and makes a living....I guess it is all about attitude!
We need to chase these politicians out.....sometimes....sometimes only hai....I feel like we should be colonized..... maybe if some other country leaders rule us...we might have a slightest chance of a visionary leader! I am just saying you know :(

Adding my 2 cents here.

Trade, not aide.

We have a mentality that "education" will fix everything and many people believe in it without even thinking through. Right now, everybody in foreign land is busy opening a school in every village that is on the map of Nepal. By this rate, we will produce lot of smart people in the future but in a land with no job, which means they will be exported to foreign countries.
"Education" is a tool, you need an environment (job) to use the tool, or else it is useless. A society with less educated people with plenty of work is far better than with lots of educated people with no job.
Skills and vocational training people will be far more effective than education in our situation. We need to export, not just import products. We need to revive agriculture, tourism, textile manufacturing and re-invent our handicraft industry so it is more up to date.
If you notice something, any Nepali overseas who opens a school in a village is praised with "wow, good job". But someone who sells made in Nepal products in a foreign land is just another "businessman". That businessman is doing better thing for Nepal than these "holier than thou" social workers and NGOs. I think we are culturally too focused on social work and not in business, it makes us vulnerable and poor mentally.
No amount of social work and foreign aid can help us, we need to make (produce) things and be able to sell worldwide. Education can help but if there is no job, education is useless for that society to prosper.

Vhootee,
you sound very Capitalist....but I do agree on the part where you said we need to focus on production and business....I second that.... and the most convincing thing you said is.....that its better to be illiterate and have a lot of job....!!!

i smell the stench coming from Nepali politician class than anything... all parties included. Whether India blocks or opens up, given Nepal's potential, we should have been in a position to stand on our own feet long time ago. Our politicians have been a sell out and have always had "Me" first attitude. This is not just our recent politicians attitude rather this stems back to the Shah kings rule and panchyat politicians included. The base where we stand on is rotten and why would the neighbors with likes of India and China not try to take advantage of it? It is a mess we all created, we are to be blamed for this.

"MODI-fying Nepal" as if the following statement were true in entirety

"Buddha was born in Nepal and not in India but Nepal is a part of India." All untrue, of course.

I never understood the whole hubbub about the Modi hysteria. Here is why - It may be true that Mr Modi applied Deng Xiaping's ideas successfully in Gujarat. But it does not elevate him into a position after that election in which he becomes a benevolent dictator who can even get away after killing a million citizens. When Narendra Modi got elected as PM, the people of Nepal were so excited as if Jesus or Vishnu were appearing in their doorsteps. India along with all the loser SAARC nations are a cauldron of unfettered corruption. There are so many powerful but regressive people over there in India who are virtually above the law almost permanently. In case of Modi's premiership it is a termed office. How much can he achieve in that limited time and can he eradicate corruption and establish a road to socio-economic prosperity? The answer is a resounding "NO" of course.
Now you see the true color with the embargo being sanctioned on Nepal on Modi's watch. If MODI was a stock ticker with lofty valuation for an IPO back in early 2014, I would have never bought into its rosy analysts' outlook. Now (you) see who is laughing?
