 Help

I just completed my associate degree in electrical engineering. Much of the ourse work looks similar for computer science and electrical engineering. I just want to complete my junior and senior level course in 1 and half year. Do you think its worth to switch major to computer science or the career is losing its value rapidly?

Do computer science major and EE minor. you will not regret. Go for computer science only if you love coding.

Study these Subjects if you want to open a store to fix broken screen of an iphone.

Seriously.  All IT companies in US are demanding to increase H1B quota from 60,000/year to  200,000 +/year.

And this is  called STEM Act.   So why IT company needs these many people every year on Engineering, Computer and Science field.

How are they going to manage the Cost? OF COURSE, cutting the salary by 10% to 18%.  So the company have to sponsor H1B, they

have to show the revenue growth.

Since STEM Act allows International students to stay and work very easily in US, all students would be only studying Engineering and

Science. So here we go DEMAND AND SUPPLY.  Then IT companies they can lower the salary by 30% to 35%.

These  would take effect once the STEM Act is passed.

THATS WHY IT COMPANY LIKE GOOGLE  DEMANDING STEM Act..CHEAP LABOR!!!!!!!!!!!

Sexy in sari is just throwing arbitary numbers out there. First of all, STEM is a much broader idea than just computer science. There are a lot of other STEM related vocations that lack skilled manpower and its a big problem for those industries because they are not able to grow as much as they want. Sexy in Sari's generalizaiton of all IT companies does not make sense at all. . The technology companies are lobbying for the STEM act not because they want to reduce the pay, but because America lacks skilled manpower. Also, surprisingly, the other problem is the reluctance of skilled Americans to relocate to a different city for new opportunies. Big tech companies give upto $20K of relocation allowances as an incentive but a lot still dont want to relocate. The government or the companies cannot change that so the way out is to get more folks from other countries. Sexy in Sari , you are totally defeating the supply demad here. If a comany is e hiring so many people, that means that they need people if they are rational . It is not a conspiracy against Nepalese and Indian IT workers to cut down their wage by 10-18% (lmao). I work for a big tech company and ask me how hard it is to recruit people. The referral money is like 3K if someone you referred gets hired. Our open positions dont get filled for months. What you are missing here is that every industry is trying to automate their processes and it requires software. That is the real reason why we the demand for computer science majors is so high. Also, my company get around 1000 applications for a position but rarely 3% of those applicants are match our expectations. So the demand is not fake or a conspiracy and to believe that is insane.

Clojure,

Sexy's interpretation is not cent percent but its true in some aspect. Tech industry wants to bring down labor cost. They don't want to spend money in traning and development. A lot of industry wants to hire contractor instead of full time, it's all about money. Saving money money in benefit and long term liability.

College recruting has gone down the hill, they hardly hire intern and prepare them with the skill they need. Your tech industry wants people with fully trained on very specific technical skill with out spending dime, that's why your position goes unfilled.

On top of it, your technical company might be in Bay Area, new work etc where COL in high and housing cost is insane and companies wants people who have house in other area to move there, why the hell will skilled people move there ? No benefit of moving for really skilled people. Tech industry need to change their approach a bit dude.

In long term H1b is not going to solve prob, those dhotis are really not high skilled, hire student , train them and let them grow in the company, dude.

Yaaku,

It is true that companies try to save money. However, what you should realize is that employee cost is just a fraction of the revenue they make . Check this post mashable.com/2012/02/07/tech-company-value-per-employee/ for more details. I am not saying that companies dont like to cut their expenses; However, growing and generating more revenue is their higher priority. I am just saying that what Sexy in Sari believes STEM to be a grand design by companies to pay the IT workers lesser is absolutely bs. And a bunch of numbers he threw out there is bogus. Also, when I said recruiting is hard, I meant for all positions. Both entry level and senior position. Also, we are not in the Bay area. One more addition, the unwillingness to relocate is not only for people with houses but with people just out of college too. Most of them have friends and family and they would not want to move to a different state if they could get a decent paying job right there. We hire a lot of students out of college and still it is hard to find students who fit the basic reqs. I didnt say indians are better and by the way H1B is not only about indians. There are a lot of talented folks that come here on H1B from China, Europe, South America, and Africa too. I am not saying  H1B is going to solve the problem entirely but it is a temporary solution and it has worked so far. Permanent solution would have to come in from the education system here . I was just concerned with Sexy in Sari's narrow view of H1B , STEM and his belief that it is some sort of conspiracy by nature. Hope I made myself clear.

How can you even think that the value of a degree in Computer Science is decreasing rapidly? If anything, we're becoming more reliant on computers than ever. It can only continue growing with no end in sight - not as long as human beings continue existing!

I would recommend you for electrical engineering rather that computer science. I am an EE so I might have a biased opinion. But with an EE you still have some option in CS areas too but with CS you will close most of the doors for EE. Also, EE is a growing field, so it is always a safe bet in terms of career. Have C, C++, Matlab, Perl, Python, Unix and this will put you in a great position. These I believe, you must have at least 2,3 by now. Analog, Mixed Signal is also a very demanding area. Wireless Communications, FPGA designs.

So I have already completed all required maths and other general ed course. I am only left with the computer subjects. I have not done any programming in my past. Every programing stuffs I have to do from scratch..in general I don't really have knowledge in programming. Its not that I feel hard but I hven't really studied this subject. I am very fond of computer though.

I am a CS major guy and don't know a whole lot about EE so my opinion will be biased. In my opinion CS has a better future because the talent in this decipline is hard to come by. We are struglling to fill positions as we can't find people with CS degrees. Most of the Americans want to graduate with easier degrees (Social science, Art etc) hence it leaves a gap in the CS area. This probably applies to EE as well. For next 15\20 years CS majors will not have problem finding a good job.
Another aspect of CS is that once you know few programming languages you can go anywhere in the world and find a job, not sure that is valid for EE.

You might consider Computer Engineering if your school has that program.

@ clojure.
You said you work for Big IT company and when I said H1b willing to work for less than of 10-18 % salary..you wrote  and here is your quote..
"
Indian IT workers to cut down their wage by 10-18% (lmao)"

Now, I am going to LMAO on you...Thanks God..i said 10-18% now look down the person claiming Indian and all H1b works for less than 40% salary..LMAO..

Here is a response to a Article on STEM hiring companies on todays 5/04/13 New YorkTimes.

    • jorge
    • San Diego

I work for one of the most successful wireless companies in San Diego, stocks and profits improving nicely, and there is a general hiring freeze... well, except for software engineers from India and China. These 'legal aliens' are well-educated, easy to work with, and will work for 40 percent less than engineers made 10 yrs ago. It's good for stockholders, but bad for all the young American software engineers who now realize that their expensive high tech educations were a bad investment. Now that both political parties have teamed up to abandon the American worker, who will be our advocate?.
