Regarding nepotism in Kathmandu University, there has been number of letters published from the faculties as well as KUPA in e-kantipur (24-27 May). Similarly, there are other write-ups in Nepali languages dailies and weeklies. We, ex graduates of KU, have compiled all these and put them in the following blog;

All the graduates and ex-faculteis are welcome to give their opinion. Let us destroy nepotism in KU.

PJRules 's assessment is still contemporary and it just goes to show how KU has sufferened from inertia all these years. In all the intervening years, competent faculty have been pushed aside by the oligarchic system of Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma and dr. Sitaram Adhikary. KUMS, for example started so well with the leadership of Dr. Arjun Karki; who was replaced by far more incompetent, Dr. Chet Raj Pant. The KU leadership has always been scared of being replaced by the competent people within KU.

There is no ends to the limits; Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, Dr. Sitaram Adhikary in KU and Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and Dr. Nastu Sharma in KUTH and KUMS will go to deceive KUPA and objectors to their dictatorships.

We have to bring back Dr. Arjun Karki, Dr. Sharad Onta and Dr. Saroj Dhital to KUMS. It is apparent that Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, Dr. Nastu Sharma and Dr. Chet Raj pant has taken KUMS downhill ever since the departure of Dr. Karki and his colleagues. Only a handful of competent faculty are left in KUMS and they have been opposing the despotic attitudes of Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and Dr. Nastu Sharma and Dr. Chet Raj Pant.

If you have seen the latest articles on SPOTLIGHT; Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, Dr. Sitaram Adhikary, Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and Dr. Nastu Sharma, similar to the Mandale Government, have bankrolled many corrupt people in Dhulikhel and Keshab Poudyel is one of them. He has been a middleman to enrol many well-connected students in KU. The truth is that few crooks with vested interests have profited greatly from these people (Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, Dr. Sitaram Adhikary, Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and Dr. Nastu Sharma) and they will show devoted support to continue the status quo.

The struggle of KUPA will not be easy because the Dhulikhel Mandale is well prepared for the battle. Somehow the reins of power these people have over KU and KUMS must be untied. KUPA, do not underestimate these Mandales that can disguise themselves in Congress colours whenever they feel like it. It will not be long before the people realize the real nature of Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, Dr. Sitaram Adhikary, Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and Dr. Nastu Sharma. However, these people are very smart and really capable of ruling KU, KUMS and KUTH for the next 30 years.

I agree that the previous or current dears or pets of Shuresh Raj and Sitaram Should not taken over the KU. That's why I was making aware of Surendra Raj Kafle, he was the number one "paltu kutta" of Suresh Raj Sharma at that time. He was not given red meat by Shutresh Raj Sharma and he is barking against him now,. Beware of this Kutta Surendra Raj Kafle. One more thing, Suresh Raj Sharma's successor is Dr. Shaligram Pokharel, who is a Professor in Singhapore, he is a big shot, sounds like he can handle the position of VC of KU. However I heard that Shaligram is also some close relative of Suresh Raj Sharma. Any ways we cannot stop the Nepotism, but the law should be perfect, there shouldn't be Mandale Tantra there. However no body should take it as personal, if some one is fired because of performance, then we shouldn't go agianst those things. Academic Institution is totally dedicated for students, if some thing goes wrong for students and alumni then we should go agaist it. If the academic environment is bad then we should go against it. If a good and great teacher will be fired then we should go against it, but that teacher should be god and great for students not for others.

We donot know the details of why Dr. Boris Niraula was fired recently from KU, that escalated the recent protests. But this does not hide that fact that KU sufferes from corrupt and dictatorial practices; particularly in KUMS. Borninusa mentioned that we should not complain if one person has been fired for incompetence - if thats the case thats fine. But the problems in KU go far deeper than that. People like Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and Dr. Nastu Sharma of KUMS think the college is their personal property and they can do as they please. This sort of hypocrisy led them to remove Dr. Arjun Karki, who was doing marvellous work in KUMS with collaborations from Harvard University. There are some former employees of KUMS in USA and UK - they can vouch for what happened.


The time has come for the KU crooks to depart and let someone with cleaner past takeover. Dr. Kafle as Borninusa says is also not untainted so there needs to be a fresh face. Although, Dr. Shaligram Pokhrel seems an attractive choice, success in foreign turf should not be the only criteria for their selection - we should look for their commitment and contributions to KU and Nepal.

The old leadership of KU is not giving away easily and it has started a campaing in local newspapers by giving interviews to sympathetic reporters. Their message is the same; they should be trusted to continue their autocratic rule because only they are qualified enough to run the university. KUPA, the Association formed by disenchanted teachers is in for long fight.

I am giving Dr. Sharma's quotation "Any teaching faculty of KU go for higher study in abroad they are anti-nationalist". This is the exact english translaton of Dr. Sharma's statement gave to us at the end of the year 2000. I was working as a Assis Prof.at that time.At that time no body was able to defend infront of him.If you say any thing against him you will be in RED LISTED.I spent my important time 5 years in KU what I get. I get termination from KU when I came to USA for higher study.Thanks for their decision!! I do not have any intension to go and work in that hell.KU is the prime example of intelluctual corruption place.I red some of Dr. Sharma's article and he is saying himself a SADU.In fact he has to Pashupati and become sadu by resigning KU.He is good to be a sadu by putting ash in his body rather than VC.

The outstanding solution for KU is as following
1. Present Sharma, Adhikari and Company must be resigned ASAP.
2. An investigation committe must be formed to investigate their irrigularities in the past. I am quite confident they have done a lot of corruption in the past. So have to brought in justics.
3. An adhoc committe must be formed to find capable VC, and ...others As it is done in US universities.
4. Present Ruler must understand that this is not their own property. It is public property so has to be operated that way not by their on will.

We, the faculty of KUMS and KU are wholly in agreement with Athens' views about KU. For too long. Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma and Dr. Sitaram Adhikary have behaved as if KU was their personal property to be used for their personal benefits. Likewise, Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and Dr. Nastu Sharma have behaved as if KUMS is their sole property. They have removed most of the competent staff who dared to stand up to them.

Like Athens in US, other KU and KUMS faculty who spent their precious years in service of KUMS and KU have ended up in USA, UK and Europe. These people have been so disillusioned that they might never return to work in Nepal again.

We want these corrupt individuals to be removed from KU and KUMS and the governemnt to find competent people in their places.

Recently, Bel Prasad Shrestha, former mayor and royalist spoke in defense of Suresh Raj Sharma in Spotlight. There are many others with vested insterest who have benefitted wrongly from KU and these people will not give up the fight easily. These corrupt people must be removed at once from KU.

What the hell is going on here?
Stop this bullsh and spare your time helping others.

We are trying to save a national institutition from some corrupt people like Suresh Raj Sharma and Sitaram Adhikary. Only if people like these are removed can we build KU or our country.

I am the first batch at school of engineering in KU. I strongly protest nepotism in KU.
What I mean here is why u guys are wasting your time here?
Your opinion does not matter and no one gives a bullsh.
Save your energy and time for other imp work in your life.

Thats where you are wrong if you think it makes no difference voicing your opinion. Information is a very powerful force for change so we have to present the facts as they stand. KU has been misued for personal benefits by some people and we have to stop it.

That was just a freindly tease man, don't take it personally. At least voice does something and it has the power if directed towards the right place. Btw which program are u from? ME, EE or CE? if u are from ME, you must be Ashok Shrivastav or Rakesh Khanal. If you are from EE then Ajay Sharma, if from CE then Kishor Sigdel.
I know all of these guys, and they are awesome, I was very close with these first batch guys who are in United states now.

Its great to hear KU products are doing well in USA but do not forget the people who have to work in KU day to day everyday. I am sure you hold strong attachments to kU and Nepal and will do what you can to help its future. It would be very useful to get feedbacks from you guys about your views because you know KU from inside. If KU can escape from Nepotism and corruption for ever, it will be good for all of us. Good riddance to the crooks for misusing their powers.

Dr. Sitaram Adhikary , the registrar of Kathmandu uniersity is spreading false rumours that the recent protests could adversely affect image of KU - no doubt in the short term it will, but it is for the best of KU to have the truth out in the open so something can be done about it rather than sweeping it under the carpet. Sitaram and his team would like to portray a doomsday scenario - so lets not be taken in by them.

Dr. Suresh Raj SHarma and Dr. Sitaram Adhikary are running scared of the recent movements to remove them. Dr. Suresh Raj has said that he tried to remove Dr. Boris Niraula because students did not think he could teach! THis is amazing turn around because several of his and Dr. SItaram's relatives are far worse teachers and they have more complaints from students but they have not been removed.
Also, he admitted the government gives KU Rs. 1 crore a year and that is more per student than Trivuwan University gets because KU has far smaller number of students than TU. Dr. Suresh Raj has been saying that he can do what he likes in KU because KU doesnot get that much support from government. But KU has to be accountable to the fee payers or the students for it is their money that is maintaining KU.
