Your arguments are evolving and diversifying. However, you still fail to show you have superior and better idea than organizers and supporters of May 15 pro-democracy rally represent. So your earlier ridiculing remarks to the rally, which you are saying you still stand by, fail to stand.

If you really want to make a case against the rally, here is the petition and official slogans prepared by the organizers, suggest improvements or oppose all of them if you can.

Mr. President,

We, the people of Nepali origin living in North America, and friends of Nepal have gathered here at Lafayette Park in Washington DC to show our solidarity with the people of Nepal in their quest for democratic rights and civil liberties.

We condemn the assumption of absolute power by King Gyanendra on February 1, 2005; imposition of draconian measures to restrict fundamental freedoms, including freedom of assembly and expression, right to information, and the protection against arbitrary arrest and imprisonment of individuals; and detention of political leaders, human rights activists and journalists. This royal coup has blatantly breached the understanding between the Nepali people and his predecessor, as enshrined in the 1990 Constitution.

Although the King has recently lifted the state of emergency in the face of sustained international pressure, fresh measures have been introduced to severely curb political activities. Many political leaders, activists, and journalists are still under detention and others are barred from leaving the country. Fundamental rights remain suspended. Extra-constitutional bodies have been created to undermine the due process of law.

We strongly demand that the King demonstrate his commitment to democracy in action and not just in words. He must immediately lift all restrictions on free speech, publication, right of peaceful gathering and movement; dismantle all bodies and processes that infringe on the constitutional provisions; and stop interfering with the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law. The Government ought to immediately stop extra-judicial arrests and killings by the security forces and must respect its commitments to human rights consistent with the Constitution of Nepal and international treaties.

Resolving the Maoist insurgency is the foremost problem for Nepal at present. Military action alone will only exacerbate the conflict and deteriorate the human rights situation further. Together with serious military pressure, a broad-based political process--including change in the Constitution, if necessary--will be essential to find a political settlement to the problem. And no political process will be legitimate and credible unless the sovereign people have the right to choose their representative government.

We condemn the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) for their acts of killings, extortions, abductions, and destroying public infrastructure. We call upon them to fully renounce violence as a method of political change and come forward for a negotiated settlement with a representative government. The Maoists must abide by the universally accepted norms of human rights.

Mr. President, we commend your zeal to spread democracy across the world, which will give lasting global stability, peace and prosperity. We are confident that you would not allow anyone to extinguish the light of freedom in Nepal for which many Nepalis have made the ultimate sacrifice. Therefore, we request you to take the following measures urgently in order to help Nepal establish full democracy:

1. Apply increased political persuasion and pressure on the King fully to reverse his February 1 move and other steps that have undermined democratic values and institutions, and ask other countries to do the same.

2. Suspend US military assistance to Nepal until a representative government is in place and persuade other countries to follow suit. Otherwise, much of the military aid is likely to be used to suppress political dissent rather than to confront the Maoists.

3. Appoint a special envoy to coordinate US-Nepal policy with other interested parties (including India, China, Great Britain, the European Union and the UN) to help resolve the political crisis in Nepal and democracy take root there.

4. Use substantial US political and diplomatic strength to bring the King, political parties, and the Maoists to the negotiating table and resolve the conflict through dialogue.

5. Encourage and support the Congress to send a fact-finding mission to Nepal and suggest possible remedies.

We take this opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude to you and the Government and people of the United States of America for condemning the royal coup and for your increased efforts and support to strengthen democratic values and institutions in Nepal.

Washington Post reports upcoming rally

(Washington, May 11, 2005) -- Nepalese from across the United States will gather at LaFayette Square at noon Sunday to protest their monarch's revocation of democracy, press freedom and human rights. The gathering comes as many foreign governments are losing patience with King Gyanendra and his harsh tactics against a Maoist insurgency in the Himalayan nation.

Gyanendra suspended most democratic institutions in 2002 and declared absolute rule Feb. 1. Human rights activists, student leaders and politicians have been disappearing by the thousands as the military suppresses dissent and criticism of the palace, while pursuing the Maoists in the mountainous countryside with increasingly brutal force.

Sujata Koirala, a member of the Nepali Congress party and daughter of former prime minister G.P. Koirala , will be joining the protesters Sunday. She has direct experience with the violence in her country -- she was almost killed this winter when a bomb exploded at her house in Nepal. She blames the attack on the army.

Nepal's former ambassador to the United Nations, Murari Raj Sharma , will address the crowd. "People look over their shoulders before opening their mouths" in Nepal, he said in a statement. "They are frightened."

On Monday, Gareth Evans , president of the advocacy organization International Crisis Group, sent a letter to British Prime Minister Tony Blair , Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan , urging concerted action to restrict military aid to Nepal until democracy is restored.

After Gyanendra declared absolute rule, India and Britain suspended military assistance to the country of 25 million and broke off diplomatic relations. But the United States did not cut off its $22 million military aid package, which is used to purchase M-16 rifles and finance military intelligence training, among other things.

The letter from the International Crisis Group said conflict in Nepal has intensified since Feb. 1, with at least 655 people killed. State security forces "were responsible for at least 530 of those deaths, many apparently innocent civilians, and the Maoists have killed 125 people, many of these also civilians," the letter said.

"King Gyanendra's self-imposed 100-day deadline to restore order and lay out a road map for democracy and peace in Nepal will pass on 11 May, with only limited progress towards these aims," the letter said. The king officially ended absolute rule last week, but human rights groups say that arrests and killings continue.

Christina Rocca , U.S. assistant secretary of state for South Asia, arrived in Nepal Monday and is scheduled to meet Gyanendra to press for a return to democracy.

An advocacy director at Amnesty International, T. Kumar , urged Rocca "not to miss the opportunity to send a strong message to the king that the United States will not sit silently and provide any military assistance until restoration of human rights and democracy in Nepal."

Yesterday, after Rocca publicly called for the restoration of democratic liberties in Nepal, the government freed four detained opposition politicians and India said it would partially resume the military aid it had suspended, according to the Associated Press.

The insurgency dates to 1996, when Maoists bent on abolishing the established order, beginning with the monarchy, began a campaign in the countryside. They capitalized on disgruntlement with a system that had concentrated money, land and power in the hands of high-caste Hindus and a few tribal chiefs loyal to the monarch.

The rebels have extended their power by raiding police stations, seizing guns and extorting money from business owners. In the meantime, the king has struggled to respond. He dissolved parliament in 2002 and has fired three prime ministers, moves that are not sanctioned by the Nepalese constitution.

Today, Nepalese villagers are often trapped between the gun muzzles of insurgents who demand food and lodging, and soldiers who come looking for the rebels. Before the soldiers leave, they often line up farmers and execute them for suspected complicity, according to Dinesh Prasain, a human rights activist from Nepal.

"The army justifies its human rights violations by saying, 'Look how brutal the Maoists are,' and they are," Prasain said. "But since 1996, 12,000 people have died. The state security forces have killed close to 7,800 Nepalese while the Maoist rebels have killed about 4,200, a ratio of two to one." The figures have been documented by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the United Nations and other organizations.

"We understand the role of the army is to fight the insurgency, but it also has to be accountable to the people of Nepal and respect human rights and international humanitarian terms and conditions," said Prasain, a sociologist.

Two million people have moved to neighboring countries as refugees, Prasain said. In February, he joined that list, fleeing to India with four members of his Collective Campaign for Peace, a coalition of 40 organizations. By his account, hundreds of activists continue to report on human rights violations through an underground network. It remains risky work. Last Thursday, Gagan Thapa , a student leader, was snatched by police as soon he was released by court order. "They have this revolving-door system," said Prasain.

Now Prasain is in the United States, brought here by Nepalese Americans in an effort to raise awareness of the crisis in his country.

"I really would like to go back," he said, "but what good would I do in jail?"

And yes I stand by my earlier comments. With the likes of SUJATA bajaine on the protest rally, my cynicism and apathy has even increased more. I recognize the fact that she is one of the most hated political personalities in Nepal. I personally too carry greatest detest for someone who has never even contested an election, let alone win one, yet claims to be a political leader by the mere virtue of being Girija's daughter, and manipulates Nepali Congress at her whim.

As proponents of DEMOCRACY, however, it would be unwise NOT to welcome ANYBODY who wants to join us for the cause of fight against tyranny, both of the King AND the MAOIST.

Nevertheless, please take not of the fact that Sujata Koirala is NOT being granted prominence at the rally by letting her share the podium. I am also partly responsible for promoting this idea among some of the key organizers. She will be there, just like any other ordinary Nepali who worries about the fate of democracy in Nepal. But, NO, SHE WILL NOT BE SPEAKING AT THE RALLY OR EVEN BE GRANTED ACCESS TO THE STAGE.

By not letting her on stage and not considering Sujata pakhandi a leader (joke) enough to speak at the rally, I do acknowledge the sane and sound motive of some/many participants. Kudos to you guys.

Trust me, hundreds and maybe thousands would NOT ONLY have been cynical, but also downright reject the rally as a work of some people who have no other motives besides DEMOCRACY and respect for HUMAN RIGHTS.

t is real sad that we are breaking into even smaller pieces from already divided Nepalese. Are we ever gonne be united again? Now Sujata will be joining the rally representing Nepali Congress and soon UML & RPP gonna wanna send someone from their party and that would make rest of the other parties feel like "Hamro parti chain ke ko kum". Soon there will be more division within Nepalese (resident or non-resident). More like. Finally on this one, you have come out of your BLANKET cynicism and contributed something SPECIFIC, something positive.

This was my point all along. Be specific, bring ideas- better ideas, creative ideas, get involved, take risk to err and learn and so on.

I am absolutely with you in noting that the organizers have failed to make it absolutely clear that they are rejecting not only "Absolute Monarchy" and "Obsolete Maoism", but also "Corrupt Democracy".

As for Sujata, as Poonte ji explained, she is going to be there as an ordinary participant. As a practicing democrat, I do not have any problem with that. And trust me, I won't attend, forget promoting, a rally that celebrates icons of "Corrupt Democracy" as celebreties.

You have let me down guys by calling Sujata as a guest of honour in the rally.

IndisGuise, you have some very strong points. I stand with you on this issue.
My suggestion is, don't let Sujata participate in the rally at all. Liar, power and money hungry self-acclaimed leaders like her are the cause for this sort of rally. She might be walking along side other nepalese in this protest but if their wishes are to come true, she will be one of the first ones to backstab. And if you cannot realize this from reading all the interview excerpts that were filled with lies, since she left Nepal, you should not even consider joining the rally. After all, corrupt politicians like here are the first cause to bring Nepal to the situation that it is in today. So letting her walk hand in hand with those Nepalese that really want a change in Nepal, would mean supporting leader like her.

I do feel the same need as expressed in some of the slogans posted by Nepe, but left me ask you one question, who is the sole cause for this disaster, monarchy, Maoists or party leaders? Only if the party leaders had reviewed the constitution properly after 1990, limiting powers of the palace (especially that of RNA), only if party leaders had been dedicated in serving people and the country, we would not have been in this situation. They are the sole cause for this disaster, hence this need for the protest rally, and I don?t see any slogans against them. What a farce?

As far I as I know, Sujata has not been invited by the organizers as a guest of honor or anything like that.

The news about Sujata's participation comes from a reporter of Washington Post based on reporters's own conversation with Sujata.

So let's not jump to any conclusion before knowing everything.

SUJATA is NOT guest of HONOR. Frankly she is just short of "persona non-grata." She will have NO access to podium. Yes we have criticized the poor handling of party and have demanded for more inclusion, internal democracy, younger cleaner faces in leadership and transparency. If you simply were present at the Rally, you will be very PROUD of the organizers and the message we are trying to send from the Land of the Free.

I have all the respect for your sincere effort in denouncing dictatorship and calling for restoration of democracy in Nepal. I am also one of the sajhaites who have been relentlessly writing against King Gyanendra after Feb 1. But when I find some one like Sujata being associated with a pro-democratic program in Washington, I loose my temper. I would be fine with even Girija and Madhav Nepal if they plead that they won't repeat their mistakes again. They have at least done something good for the cause of democracy before the 1990 revolution and if they beg pardon to the people and retire from politics, they could be exempted for their misbehaviours. But Sujata, Khum Bahadur, Bijay Gachhadar, Govinda Raj Joshi, Bamdev Gautam, Bhim Rawal etc - I hate them as much as I hate Gyanendra and Sharad Chandra Shaha.

I know that a rally needs publicity and a daughter of a former primeminister can draw the attention of US media. But, the presence of Sujata will simply cast shadow on your sincere effort. Make no mistake, the participation in the rally has already recieved a severe blow because the news report highlighting the name of Sujata has been posted by Poonteji in Sajha. He should have deleted that part before posting the washington post report.
Still, I urge my fellow sajhaites to attend the rally to see if the organisers will keep their promises and deny Sujata any chance of bragging abt. her so called fight for democracy. This is not only an oppurtunity to denounce King Gyanendra but also a chance to demonstrate our hatred against the likes of Sujata. The best lesson should be given to her this time.
