 Folks,
We have discussed quite a bit in the aspect of religions that involved for the society what it meant to shape us now and what it is now. We evaluated a lot of verses written a few thousands years ago, in that context. And we do work hard to understand (interpret) in today's sense. And quite a few things still do make sense.

Here is what I propose to ponder:
What should be the role of religion moving forward?
What should it teach, focus, encourage(discourage)?

Some religions talked salvation(Moksha), some englightenment, etc etc..(but only a few similar ones)

What is should be the purpose?

Moreover, thinking even more radically, is there even a place for religion?

What do you think?

Sap Dude
Love=Cow (Wrong Comparison).I get it, it is religious.
Love=Dog (No religion involved, very universal)

Thast's all I'm saying. I get it, it can be sensitive to sell cow meat on the street. But at the same time, it should not be against the law or frowned upon simply the restaurant serve cow meat. There is a thread about it here. In this day and age, it is a backward mentality to think they are doing something sinful or wrong. If people have designated place to kill cows and sell, it should not be discriminated, that includes restaurant. If Koreans come and overpopluate Nepal, then it will be time for dog too. We cannot hang on to your past, things change.

With that said, I'll leave this post in peace cause you cannot change people's faith. There senseless people everywhere and Nepal is no exceptional.

In a way...you have a point and i understand where you are coming from. One day if USA and other western nations allow dogs and cats to be sold in the street we may have a base for good debate again. Until then...we just have to accept that all cultures are the same way for now.

Besides, i am not sure if the constitution says what the constitution (law) says about killing a cow. I do not know what the wording in in the constitution but if someone opens a cow meat butcher shop in the middle of Baneshwor or Thamel....people are going to create a riot and the owner may be persecuted for disturbing the cummunal harmony. They do not even need to dig up the case all the down to Cow butchering.

But if some village next to Tibet with majority of cow eating residents decide to murder a cow and eat it without announcing it to the rest of the Nepal saying " hey...over here in our village...we butchered the cow and ate it happily" no one will care and nothing will happen. ( just my thought)

And for the most part, it seems like the cow eaters are not just for being able to eat a cow, they want to announce that " they killed a cow and ate it" When i am in Nepal i ordered a burger in Thamel and they had steak in the menu too. Dont understand what the fuss is if its not just about announcing it to the public that they ate the cow or to offend people by having a bloody cut up cow for a display.

Just goes to show what you assume about other people without knowing the reality. People of Tibetan origin that are Nepali generally does not eat COW, they eat yak (which you literally gave cow as the last name). All this time, I was refering to people of Christian an Muslims of Nepal, which we have plenty and growing.

I knew that was coming from you. It gives a better picture who you really are. Will wait for that day.Thank you.

Who is the main culprit who is telling you what meat to eat and what not to eat ? RELIGION.
If you take religion out of the equation--> You can eat whatever you want.
Religion wants mold you into its belief and philosophies. And if you don't fit thier norms, you are an outcaste or a non believer.  Society put religion as a foundation to controll people(with fear).  If you don't do what bible tells you, you will goto hell. If you don't follow the rules of hiduism, you goto hell etc. etc. for all religions.

Vootee,

Thanks for your participation as well. It was amusing to see how you switched from Cow to a Yak. Start a debate on whether or not its a social taboo to eat a Yak in the mountains? The response would probably be no issue.

It seems thatchristians and Muslims on the other hand want to cut open a cow in the middle of the hindu majority and make a "fk your belief" statment rather than standing for their right to be able to consume a cow as well.

I wonder why every now and then, there is a Nepali guy who converted to christianity, who comes to preach in sajha. Do you think you are above us all because now you have converted to a kuirey religion? Go look at yourself in the mirror, you are not any less Nepali. Smell your smelly shit from eating all that spicey food. Don't pretend for one second that you are better off or a better person than the rest of Nepalis that you want to look down upon.

You try to pretend to be up there but son, you're the one with a serious problem. Look around you, who has time for following some stories that were written thousands of years ago. If you didn't notice, most people today are smart to know what is right and what is wrong without having to follow someone with your slave mentality. Do you always need to feel like you have to follow something? Don't you have anything bettter to do than having to take a step as changing your religion? You must be seriously confused son. Take a chill pill.

BTW, I didn't follow the whole thread before responding but it looks like the mongrel has already escaped with his tails between his legs.

@bokaman
This is possibly what's going on in their mind:

yada yada hi dharmasya
glanir bhavati sajha.com
abhyutthanam adharmasya
tadatmanam srjamy aham

Whenever there is a decline of dharma and a rise of adharma, O sajha.com, then I incarnate Myself.

I have a suggestion for newly converted Christians who advocate for cow eating in Nepal. Start the revolution from your own house. Take some bloody red cow meat to your grandmother and your grandfather and put it in their "bhaat khane thaal" and put some in their PUJA KOTHA too. Get them used to the cow eating concept first. Change your house first, then the relatives, then the community, then the town and finally the country. In 200 years the whole nation could be a cow eating nation. Don't be afraid and start from your own house.

Oh great man with unparalleled wit, your humor is super amazing. You are naturally full witted even many half witted people would have problem filling your shoes. They just wouldn't understand that saying "lol" after every sentence or putting series of smiley after every paragraph makes their post super funny and agreed to and accepted by and hailed by everyone. I am ever amazed at your ability to show your smartness using the commonly used acronyms and smileys. Not every tom dick and harry are able to manage such a difficult task.

I have to thank you again for taking time to find my relatives video. येसो हेर्दा त कुम्भको मेलामा हराएको जुद्वा भाइ जस्तो ditto छ .

I figure i return the favor by finding your pic too. Here you go sir. This is who you are. Sir you smell like shit!

Folks,
Eating or not eating cow, who gives more money in charities, who killed more people...In the grand scheme of things, I think these points are basically irrelevant if we talk about the need/role of religion moving forward. People of any religions come up with cultures/rituals to make life more colorful...create festivals, create rituals, glorify certain things....the barebone principals of religions are basically similar of all religions and in fact are boring...that's why more tangible parts (dashain, christmas, janmasthami etc etc) are in demand. But these things have a lifecycle....they come and go (or loose the same level of significance) over a long period of time....Do you agree that Sati Pratha made a perfect sense at some point? Chhaupudi still makes sense?

I think we need to look beyond these symbols of religions..by that I mean like two dimensional tiger's drawing we show to kids so that they can understand and have fun at the same time...

The real question is: Why religion? Is there a god? Some of you touch upon it, rather blissfully.

Now I like to challange some of you great minds: We have some understanding of nature, so we know everything? So has anyone actually denied (not foolhardily) with a fact that God doesn't exist. I recall CNN interview with Stephen Hawkin's co-author (GOD) in 2010. The book GOD was supposed to dennouce the role of God, but the very guy was saying at the end of the interview that 'no, we cannot say for sure that the God doesn't exist" "All we trying to say is, the theories (Quantum and Relativity) can be explained without the role of God." I have not read the book myself, but 'is that it'? Really? Are these two theories the ultimate realities? What about GUTs like Superstring Theories? We are nowhere near understanding it....(I am laughing now)..just becuase I am eating my sandwich as lunch there is no such thing as a sushi? Sorry, I am not convinced.

Going back home....Lakshmi Prasad Devkota who all of his life promoted basically atheist belief...you all know what he ended with:

Na bhakti bho gyan, na bho bibek
Aakhir ShriKrishna rahechha Ek.

You can name scores of greatminds that denied the God during their heydays, but ended admitting not knowing anything or being a believer.

I think that's where our focus has to be. (Please argue)

If we (ever) come to  agree to the role of religions, what should it teach us?

eutab that's a very good point but is it possible that atheists give up because they cannot find any proof and then they turn to the unknown and get a little scared. What if something is really there and they will judge me after I die? Could that be the reason why many atheist later on admit confusion or admit the existence of the unknown force?

Even if there is some such as god that created the possibility of life and the materials associated with it, we do not have any kind of evidence of anything else after the first creation if that was so. So even then there doesn't seem to be a point in blindly following any God. Maybe we can reserve a special place there for whoever created this thing if it was ever created, and then simply move on to be a better human being?

@Rethink: I think you hit home pretty well.
On change of atheists’ ideas: I am not sure if I agree that the fear of judgment is the key to shift. Breaking of all ego and pride, may be. My understanding of these people is, they are thinkers…certainly are..but they find themselves nowhere (hopeless) with denials…. And this brings up points how did the religions come about.

Absolute Believers: They simply believe that there is a supreme power which is more than what we cannot understand everything fully…analogy: Two dimensional (sheet-like) creatures with their 2-D eyes cannot see a human body in 3-D. Yet, we 3-D human being exist.

Support Believers: An entity to worship, to pray to, to go to when they need a help the most. “God, help me get through this (particular) storm”…a sense of ultimate guidance that they have... I think this notion alone get people going. Even if they have no human to seek support from, they rally their energy from this very notion. I am sure those people cannot have Sajha-like J debate, but they are content.

Fear Believers: (this idea has been abused by the priests and pundits) Some people believe God more from a judgment standpoint. That a good deed brings a good fortune (here or ‘there’) and bad brings bad. The God did all the tasks of creating and nurturing to raise us and we just are supposed to behave and who will only helps us in desperate needs..Analogy: A lab of master students.
And many more…
(Quite sometimes, they overlap, by the way)

Now, you may ask me which one to be under? I don’t think it’s that simple..we human (mann – soul) is not that simple…it is very complex. Therefore, our (even 2-D) interpretation will be criss-crossed and complicated.

But the fundamental point is since our understanding (natural interpretation) is ever evading, why not give a thought to the idea of God and be happy from the day 1 instead of at the end like LP Devkota? We all know our knowledge ego goes only so far.
