I volunteered to talk to a highschool student in regards with his sociology project. He has to meet with a person from a different culture at least 6 times in his semester. Accordingly, I met with him yesterday and he asked a question which made me think a lot. "WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM AN INDIAN?" I replied him but the answer didnot convince me. I have been thinking since yesterday yet couldnot come up with a persuading answer. I know we think we are different from Indian and we dont want to be called an Indian. But how would you differentiate yourself from a bunch of Indian people?
p.s ~ this is not a thread to post any racist comments and trying to persuade the superiority of a certain group over another.

Timessquare, I thought you were confused about your sexuality because you wrote "you must be a another Go*o**Le BOka jus like me". That got me thinking. I might be confused on a lot of stuff but I am definitely not confused on my sexuality. Period.

you can rationalize and bend it anyway you want it. i wrote that because you want me to explain sth about male and that's how we boys communicate.i read somewhere that people with "sexuality/identity crisis" are very moody and sensitive about common sense jokes. Now, there's no wonder what got you thinking." I might be confused on a lot of stuff but I am definitely not confused on my sexuality. Period."hmmm.... Well you don't have to attest this again and again.anyways! just this sentence makes us all keep on thinking whether you really are what you put in your profile or what you mentioned in this thread.????

Dude, don't act big after you edited what you wrote. I still remember what you wrote and I can write it down if you want me to. Come out of the closet, it is not healthy hiding in there for too long.

This doesnt really have anything to do with me. You need to look deep into yourself and figure out what you have to do and what is right for you. Hope you will be happy with the decision that you make after that soul-searching. Good luck and there is nothing to be ashamed of.

No offence but that is a stupid question.
Busenitz you go back to that high school and ask those kids what makes them different from Canadians, and ask yourself what makes you different from Pakistanis, Bangladeshis or chinese.
It's like asking what's the difference between a cup and a glass.

YUP grgdai,
Its like how do chinese make themselves look diffferent from japanes of koreans in america? They might look similar, but we all know that they are from different countries and have their own culture. Its not like, chinese have horn on their heads and japanese have a long tail. The point is we all are human beings and will share similar traits based on regions. But for political and cultural boundries, we belong to different nations and we represent them. Busenitz, if you want to really differentitate from the indians, do wear a daura suruwal and go infront of them. I am sure they wont consider you an indian after that.

@ grgdai I know what you meant. We dont like to be called Indian for sure and how would you explain sb not to call you an Indian ? No offense brother but if are a mongolian and somebody calls you chinese, you have tonns of point to tell them why you are not chinese (beside the fact you were born in Nepal and you hold/used tohold Nepali passport). You can tell them the diffference about our culture esp. language, religion, food and the ancient civilization. But if we compare those aspects with that of Indian, its pretty much the same.
so my question: Having so many things in common, why do we act/try to act we are so different from Indians? At least we shouldnot be offended when sb calls us an Indian. In my college, there were not any Nepali and just couple ABCDEFG girls. I used to tell my frens we are totally different from Indians. The funny thing is when we had conversation about anything in a group, almost all the things about me and those girls were similar. Like when i talk about a specific food, game (we used to play as a child), or even just a perspective about sth, they would be like "Oh Yeah, I know that, We did that" I liked those girls and they were cool as cucumbers but I had hard time establishing and proving the differences between Indian and Nepali culture among my freinds ( white & black). Those freinds told used to tell me culture, people and everything looks same to them. Just to make me mad, they used to call me sometime "Indian" and I used to give them a lecture for quite a while.

tama alo bodi..farsi ko achaar..gundruk ra batmas ko tarkari..masaura/titaura ko tarkari...dedo ani sisno ko tarkar and the list goes on and on and on about what makes me a Nepali and not an indian..and alos the fact Indians do not speak nepali...nepali is the official language of nepal..
hence, once again, the importance of having our language that unites us and makes our nation a Nepal nation..............
our holidayz..kaag puja..kukur puja..gai puja....bhai tika...dashain tika concept..planting jamara concept..purely a nepali way of celebrating dussera...that is not how most indians celebrate dashain and tihar...
the fact we call them dashain and not just dussera and tihar not just deepawali..................
our nepalu luga..dhaka topi..daura surwal..ayi mai ko chaubandi cholo..fariya..ghaatima lagauney tilahari instead of mangal sutra.......etc.............
too many to type here...from food..festival..languages..to the history of never having been ruled by the British..Nepal is uniquely different from INDIA and indians...

I have really wanted to answer in this post but had wondered how to put in my perspective. Alike many of you when I think generally I too feel offensive when someone says to me “Are you an Indian?” However, as with time and company of some good Indian and Pakistani friends I am realizing that my mind needs to be open about India. I learn that I can’t look or define India through one particular lens or perspective. India is very diverse with culture and history (tradition, old civilizations, temples, to modern life in Mumbai, Banglore, Delhi Bollywood: I like Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Aamir Khan, I can’t deny that I don’t like songs of Rafi, Kishore Kumar and RD Burman , I enjoy cricket: Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid ). And YES, I hate their political f***ing attitude towards Nepal. Some businessmen and policemen also act mean to Nepali ppl in border. So, there definitely is mixed perspectives on being called Indian rather than one perspective. Now, to me it all depends on what context are they asking me the question. Sometimes it does not hurt to correct the person asking and sometime based on the person asking my blood boils !!!

indians?? ummm..
they are gopala-gopaley haru, came to kathmandu centuries ago and they 'gopala' haru still in india. so, any descendent of those gapaley haru, you do look like indian thats for sure and you don't know how to differentiate from them because it's in your gene. many migrants settled in kathmandu. so, so many inter-racial marriage took place ki k bhanney..
jaatho haru anuhar chamling ko jasto, body color heryo dhoti ko jasto.. testo bhai sakyo.. how to differentiate, it's hard.
westerners think only Sherpas or Mongolian faces are Nepalese, all aryans and other races, they think they're indian or something like that. it's a fact. they also think Nepal is a himalayan country and there snow falls whole season.
Nepal has been known so far because of mountaineering and brave gurkhas and if you seriously ask me, all these ppl are mostly chamling and mongolian faced folks, they are brave and daring by heart. If you don't have face like mongolians, even if you say you are Nepalese, they will promptly say you are an indian. that's the stereotype or whatever [Disallowed String for - bad word].. that's the truth..
