An interesting question was posed to me today. Thought I'd post it here and see what folks here would think of it:

If you are approaching age 40, is it too late to join an MBA program?

I am not talking about one of those Blue Chip MBA programs like Wharton or Stern.

The type of programs in consideration is more of mid-tier... like that of UCLA's Anderson or Rice's Jones... or even lower tier like Monmouth or Strayer.

I would like to get an MBA, but am not sure whether to do it now or later. Decisions, decisions, decisions....

i have not done MBA myself. but been to few info. sessions.. i have seen ppl over 40 in those sessions..
as long as u can do it based on ur lifestyle..

There are two guys in my MBA class in Columbia who are 48 and 45 years old and I, myself, am 35. It's never too late, my friend in the quest for education to better oneself. Good luck.

.I think its good as lots of people who are doing MBA in US are around 30s and 40s.....i am 24 and doing MBA in Webster University but most of the people in my class are around 30s and 40s.......but the good thing for them is they have experience.....Experience matters a lot while studying MBA........i have 4,5 people in mah class who are in mid 40s.so dont worry......

ya as you have said, its never late to join MBA. Infact with my personal experince its better to join MBA with some core work experience which you can apply in your study for projects and all.

Why only in the US?

In Nepal too, the trend of "older" people going back to school -- particularly for an MBA degree, which is seen as a fairly versatile degree -- has increased dramatically in the last several years, especially with the rise in the number of privately-run management schools.

In Nepal I have seen (and taught marketing research to) a number of over-40
students at evening Executive MBA classes, particularly at Ace Institute of
Management in Baneswor.

My experience is that these "older" students are:

a) extremely motivated (after all, they are attending MBA classes NOT out of some vague duty or for their parents, but because they really want to for specific career-related or some other personal/professional reasons),

b) comfortable asking a lot of difficult questions (and they draw upon their own real-life experiences to look for practical relevance in all fancy academic theories),

c) necessary to have in classroom to raise the level of discussions.

As a part-time teacher once upin a time, I certainly learnt a lot from these mature, motivated and very hardworking students.

If that's the case in small Nepal, I am sure, mighty US universities would be all the
more welcoming of motivated students who present compelling reasons for doing
an MBA at pretty much any age.

I think les not twist the fact. Nobody does MBA to better your education for oneself..maybe to better your green sheets!

Similarly people who are doing phd, are merely doing it cause they didn't know what else to do :).

Here's how I look at it:

Learning for the sake of learning is good at any age.

But, most likely, you will be doing MBA for more than that, and especially for one particular reason. Yes, to make more money!!!

So, given the fact that you will be spending something in tune of $200K for your MBA, not counting the opportunity cost, you should consider how much of an ROI will there be.

Say you become a freshly minted MBA when you are 40, you still have 25 years (assuming you retire at 65) to get back that money and lot more. So logic dictates it should be a viable project.

Now, there are equally interesting alternatives to getting MBA and joining corporate rat race, but that's another story.
