The recent public appearance in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, of Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal, alias Prachanda, led to much excitement.

But for some, it is ironic that a man who has led a ruthless war that took the lives of 13,000 people is being treated like a hero.

For many others, he is a hero, who has given a voice to millions of downtrodden people in one of the poorest countries in the world.

So is he a hero or villain?

Demands

When Prachanda launched an armed rebellion in 1996, Nepal had just restored multi-party democracy after 30 years of direct rule by the king.

A peaceful people's uprising in 1990 had forced the then King Birendra to become a constitutional monarch and after a smooth transition, a new constitution was written and democratically elected leaders were in power.

"The war has encouraged and spread a culture of intimidation and violence"
- Maoists' reclusive leader

Despite concerns about corruption, democracy was slowly taking root.

Schools, roads and bridges were being built and businesses were expanding.

Though records have fluctuated, the GDP growth rate in 1995/96, when the Maoists began their insurgency, was 5.4%, an encouraging figure for Nepal.

The immediate reason given by the Maoists for the declaration of war was that the government rejected their demands "without giving them any attention".

Many of those demands related to political and social reforms which most Nepalis would find acceptable.

However, few agree that the government's rejection of the demands was enough reason to declare a war which has caused Nepal enormous suffering.

Violence and intimidation

The Maoists have used violence to push demands.
Accurate independent figures about the economic costs of war are not available.

However, according to Finance Minister Ramsharan Mahat, the damage to infrastructure alone amounted to $246m - around 15% of Nepal's current annual budget.

The Maoists have used threats, extortion and killings to get their way.

They have killed poor, innocent people and those who have criticised their top leaders.

The war has encouraged and spread a culture of intimidation and violence, which is bound to have a long-term impact in a society which was credited for peace and harmony.

Prachanda and others have defended these tactics, arguing that during war such incidents do occur and that they regret mistakes.

Many find it difficult to agree. They argue that Prachanda and many top Maoist leaders are, in fact, more feudal and hypocritical than those whom they regard as such.

There appears to be some truth in this.

'Well-fed' rebel

Prachanda speaks passionately about the need to dismantle feudal structures to create a proletarian society but he has remained quiet about his own elevation as a demi-god by his supporters.

The rich and ruling elite in Kathmandu, who the Maoists view as feudal and want to destroy, has been left untouched throughout the war, whereas poor and ordinary villagers have suffered.

The war has caused ordinary Nepalis enormous suffering.
After seeing Prachanda's pictures, a teacher at a village school recently told me: "Prachanda looks very well-fed. In fact, his healthy diet is bought from the money extorted from poor people like myself.

"Or else, where does he get the money from?"

For Prachanda India was an expansionist foe.

Out of the first nine points in his 40-point demands submitted to the government in 1996, seven were directed against India.

However, it has been an established fact that during much of the insurgency both Prachanda and his deputy, Baburam Bhattarai, have spent time in India.

There have been credible reports that Indian authorities have covertly co-operated with the Maoists at times.

That explains why after the insurgency started they have rarely been critical of India.

'Power of the gun'

This does not mean Prachanda is devoid of virtue.

Many middle-class villagers like Prachanda would have preferred an easy route in life. However, he chose a difficult path to pursue his conviction that "power comes from the barrel of the gun".

Risking his life, he did derive that power and made the powerful ruling elite of the country realise that they cannot take their privileges for granted.

Prachanda claims to have dismantled the feudalistic social structure in the villages under Maoist control. To an extent this is true.

There is also a growing awareness about social and political rights in rural Nepal because of the insurgency.

For now Prachanda seems to have accepted that there is no alternative to multi-party democracy in Nepal.

But many would continue to question whether all the killing and destruction was necessary for him to accept what Nepal's major communist parties accepted a long time ago.

Much will depend on how much he can deliver in Nepal's future political set-up.

Some brainless people, devoid of common sense to derive what is right or wrong and what is truth and realistic in the time being, always use Bhupi Serchand's lines
" hudaina bihana ...mirmirae ma tara gharere na gaye"
" bandaina muluk dui char saput marera na gaya."

Bhupi after all was a normal human being. His lines should not be used as a universal truth.

I think most people who are against prachanda are the ones who are rich and they are against him because they fear they will lose their or their parent's money if communism is brought in the country. But even if communism is brought in the country, I don't think it will do bad for people who are already rich. (Because in this era, strict communism cannot exist.) But will be definitely benefcial to those who are poor. I suppose more than 90% of nepali are poor. If the major population of the country poor, the country itself will be poor.

So think about the country and not just yourself.

democratic way is the only way a country can progress.

Look at china, it has CAPITALIZED. People are getting rich there...look at beijing and shanghai... It's only in rural villages that the people are suffering...but it's because of the local government there, not central govt. Chinese govt control people...through press... there is no press freedom. Can you believe that a lot of chinese don't even know about Tiananmen Square?? But it won't be like that in nepal, because we have press freedom.

he is a hero for me thus far. nepal's problem lies in social disparity. it is so deeply rooted in our society that no one dared to even talk about the issue, let alone fight for it.

Prachanda had a ball to lead the people's revolution to fight against this unjust society. he's appoach may have been violent, but the motive was an eye-opener for the people to let them see what they are missing out on even after the so-called democratic revolution of 1990.

If maoists accomodate themselves in the multiparty democratic structure and commit themselves for democratic practice, then they will be on a role. they will lead the nation for towards success and prosperity for bagful of years.

He's a pinko. What's there to like about him? By the way, communism has its roots in the idea of "utopianism", which was heavily promoted by people like Francis Bacon, Thomas More, and Tomasso Campanella. The idea has been termed "counter renaissance". As we know, renaissance had its roots in the idea of humanism. Basically they valued life over God, so to speak, and had a taste for "the good letters". They were big fans of people like Socrates, Aristototle--the ancients, so to speak. Sure, utopianism has done a lot for European society. For example, the Welfare system has its roots on utopianism. The whole idea of healthcare for all is utopianism. Socialism is utopianism as well if you ask me. However, utopianism is just too idealistic or "quixotic", and so is communism. It is a failed concept. The idea is good, but it doesn't really work that way. Not everybody wants to work for the "common good". Some people are motivated, while others are not.

He's a pink commie. Correction.
He has blood of thousands of dead Nepalis in his hands. Nepal's economy has stagnated because of the war started by his ilk. China's economic system is capitalistic now. The idiot thinks China has strayed too far from the visions of Mao Zedung. The guy is a whackjob. Somebody needs to blow his balls off with an M-16.

Pachanda is not hero or villian ,he is a fat pig!!!

he did not do this for nepali people .He did to satisfy his power hungry nature. He is no better than any other leaders in nepali politics. He belongs to same catergory. He has no vision whatsoever and people who think commies are going to change Nepal .Dream on buddies!!!.

yes they will change from poor to poorest. So called democracy to Anarchy. No election , they will just hold whatever post they like. how much there word means we have already seen and we are seeing. You blind supporters of Parchanda open your eyes!!!

I don't doubt there has been unfairness in Nepal but where in the world there is fairness.Even in communist country there was so many descrimination. What they call reformed maoism is joke .Either they should consider themself pure communist or join stream line living behind their commies ideals .Communisim and democracy do not go hand in hand .get that!!!

Sajhauser no body fears for money Ok!!
the point is it is not going to do good to any poor !!
People lose rights to speak

These commies will do whatever they please no one dare to point finger at them or their head will be chopped off!!.This is how it has worked in past and is working and they will be working.Nepalese people will lose freedom!!!!

In this era , Govt. is not responsible for feeding people instead it is responsible for creating open economic policies where capitalists can invest and create jobs.Which will help poor to get job and stand on thier own feet.
Expecting any thing from govt. is wrong!!There is no free money.Poor remains poor unless they help themself.(this is big sentence , u think!).

My feeling is
All want power............Fame..........Controll...........
if Prachanda........had a vision for a better Nepal...why did he order the mass killings of innocent people...school bombings.......Nepal is a poor country and he ordered the killing and robbing of innocent people......huge extortions ...massive abduction to join the so called movement of his.........destruction of proprerties...so valuable to the Nepalese people eg several...schools, post offices, medical centers, courts...companies, houses, list goes on and on......I felt that his goal was great but the path he took to achieve it was a bad one......Nepali Killing Nepali............common we nepali call each other......Even to strangers...as ...
DAI....BHAI....DIDI.....BAINI.......AMA.......BUA......BAJE.......BAJAI....etc etc...what a great society............NOw value of that relation lost ...if we account for all his actions ......He is a murdering criminal like all the power hungry prospects of people who think they can lead Nepal.......Since he is getting away with all that crime he has done. not even a slap on the wrist ......He is now more encouraged......bold.....strong.....unstoppable.....For someone who hid in the jungle. I feel that once in power he will show his true self...........because admit it all ....Im sure all who read here and are abroad are not from the poorest of nepal......you all are from either, medium,......or..... rich,.......or...... decent...or..... educated family who is here working , studying , earning a living for a better life , money, education.......Now we fall in the may be 16% of nepalese people V/S rest ......gosh we are the minorities in prachandas movement..............my family worked hard to provide a life style for us ...education.......and everything else.....So am I to feel guilty and will my family be punished in Nepal for being "well off"???? will yours too??? I mean where is this Going???? I understand that people are poor in Nepal but but now their frustation will rise a mob mentality that Prachanda is well aware of .....and Beware...soon anyone in Nepal (KTM) and other big cities with a house, car, standard life .....Bike..Business.......quality education....is going to be the target.........

Gosh ...............Scary.........someone tell me its not going to happen....

I do not want Prachanda to be the the head of the country. I too, like many Nepalis, fear him. What would he do if he came in power? BUT, I think it is necessary for him to be there for Nepal, to bring the politicians in line. Like lutekukkur said, he has opened eyes of nepali people.

Nepalis have started to think for their country. They have realized that politicans don't just build the country with their magic wand. People have to let the politicians know what they need, what they want, what is injust. But how would the people's voice be heard??? People's voice has never been heard without help of prachanda and his gang.

Prachanda himself said in his recent interview that he would not want to be some head of state or minister. Whether you believe him or not is your personal thought.

Prachanda to me, is a hero. I used to blindly support nepali congress before. Because of maoist problem, I started to think about the cause of problem. And I thought there was good cause behind it. It was for the voice of common people. Now I can think of greater good. Think outside the box!

There is no such thing as a hero or a villain.
One man's hero is other man's villain.
One man's villain is other man's hero. Someone just does things and other interpret as they please, heroic or villainous.
Prachanda had a vision, he organized his party and soldiers to achieve what he viewed.
Stalin was a mass murderer in the eyes of the west while he was the idol of millions of Russians. Lyndon Johnson and company gave the continuity to the Vietnam war causing over 50,000 American casualties. He still is a well respected American president but to parents of those sons who died, he is a murderer.
The point is do what you please, may be you can go stop what Prachanda is doing or may be you could have stopped the murder of 13,000 people. But you chose to make your career and to have fun. (Which is exactly what I am doing too).
Right now too, you are just choosing to blow the whistle at the forum where nothing really matters.
I respect him for trying to make some difference, having a vision and being a good leader but he is not my hero.

Sahila.

Well sajhauser as much as i wouuld like to believe you...........I still have my doubts....
Whose eyes did he open I really dont see or get because.....GIRIJA the #1 Thug and corrupt politician who the people voted out again and again is in controll...or is he??
the situation of nepal is now turning into the mob mentality where no one is safe from extortion, robbery and unnessary assault. If He ..Prachanda will stop this than I might see some light out side the box.....But if he quitely lets this go on ........Nepal has certainly chosen her dooms day........it is the gang of poor uneducated village people who are in the frontline of Prachandas army...........Like the uneducated Nepal police Sipai and army...lowest level....all abusers of authority....that should be controlled....
but I still have very little hope for our country.....more I am worried for my friends and families safety......Arent you????
