Do you believe in GOD? Why do we often turn to god and pray?

yes i believe in god, not in idols and stuff, but in an omnipresent, omnipotent spiritual energy that guides us all. this energy IS God. but then the argument often goes if God exists why is there so much suffering and pain ...well i don't know the answer to the question. may be its our attachment to materialism, accodring to Buddishm.

I was asked this question, in my critical thinking class. The teacher stressed on the fact that it is a "Hypothetical construct". But, I was like, I believe in god. I had nothing to prove it but still I went on. Later, I thought about it and I was like yeah that dude was right, why do I believe in God. Maybe, because that is what we have been taught.

regarless of whether there is god or not it is not going to change any one of us fundamentally.

no, i don't believe in god...and i don't believe in heaven and hell. i believe in what is here....whatever else i don't care about it. If there is happiness then there should be sadness too ...otherwise how would know what happiness is. If everyone is happy all the time there would be too many ppl ...there is death because ppl need to die. If no one died, we would run out of things.

People believe in god i think, cause it gives them a sense of security , that there is a devine power to look after us in our hard times, it gives them explaination to the things that they fail to understand,it gives them hope , and in one way it is helping them by giving them direction, focus and a sense of society, culture and brotherhood.i am a man of science and the idea of a physical GOD is propesterous to me , but i do support the idea of religion ( not blind faith or illogical superstetions) but the concept of what good and bad is,what virtues are and stuff like that,i guess it serves like a stress relief in this hectic society.But Religion has been very misinterpreted in todays worlds and misused .so i guess there should be a boundary to what extent the idea of GOD and religion i sdoing in today's world, i sit doing more harm tahn good? sometimes i wonder.

I keeping saying to myself that I don't beleive in God. But whenever I'm in trouble the feeling of God automatically pops up on my brain.
so i don't exactly know whether I beleive in Him or not.

My soul is my god. When I am lonely, I talk with it. I get encouragement from it. It gives me inspiration to go through the tough times. It gives me shades of satisfaction when I am happy. It cries when I am in pain. My god is my soul... GOD is in my soul.

because god is the creator of this entire world.... hehe

It seems like i only pray to god and think about god and believe in god only when i am in a mess or when i have a big problem or something ke! Does that mean i am selfish? :( :(

no nails it does not make you selfish, that's what most people in the world do! like i said earlier people have to have a sense of hope that everything will be alright when they are in a mess, like you put it up, if it helps you gives you the self assurance and you fight back, saying i'll give the best rest is in god's hands, this way at least you are giving you best right. now thinking that god will handle everything without you doing anything that would not be right.

I just wanted to know out of curiousty what u all visualize when u think of god..for those of u who do believe in the all mighty...whos face do u see when u think about God?

I completely agree with what lcf123 on this one. God is a spiritual power that inspires u at times and leads us to success. I like the saying "God helps those who help themselves". God comes into existence when u have faith that it exists, and it is watching and supporting u.
I am a Hindu, and as far as I can comprehend Hinduism, God == hinduism and vice versa. We normally don't tend to think of god outside of our religion.

Do I believe in God? Well dunno, but there must be something out there, u know it gives u hope when u in trouble. I don't believe in heaven or hell, there is one life and its here and now.
