If you are sending withing Kathmandu, I have no idea BUT if it is outside valley, it's not good at all. At least I didnt like it. I send some money to Biratnagar and what they do is send a Bank draft by mail. Now imagine Mail in Nepal....It almost got landed to someone else's house. I use Thamel's money transfer site. They are good. They deposit directly to the recepient's bank. The best way is to make a Paypal card in the recipient's name and send them. Once you transfer the fund here they can withdraw from the bank there. $300 perday limit and $1 charge per transaction. Perfect. That is what i do now a days. Peace

I tried both Thamel and Moneygram, but it didn't work for me. Thamel's money transfer program is down for some reason, and Moneygram doesn't seem to be work in CA. The last option i had that muncha.com, but it's funny how they dont respond when you call their tollfree number.

To get Paypal card, go to www.paypal.com and get an account. It is free. Once you get a debit card in your name, order another card as a co-user in the name of person who is going to use the card in Nepal( for instance your mom , dad or brother sister). When you get the card and the PIN number with your parent's name on it, send it to nepal via MAIL or with someone. You can then deposit any amount of money in your paypal card and then any one with another card can take money out of the ATM machine in Nepal. It sounds a lengthy process but once you get both the cards ( yours and your parent's), its is all good. It costs just $1 for one transaction in Nepal... can withdraw upto $400 dollars in nepal in one day. Try getting the card in your name first...start the process today and after a month you will find your family members using the card in Nepal. The best thing is ...it is absolutely free to get the card. And instead of paying 15-20 bucks everytime you send money home, it will just cost 1 dollar. Plus, when you are transferring money in your Paypal card from your bank account ( similar to paying your credit card), it takes 3 business days to transfer. It is ready for both the card holders ( nepal and here) to use it after that. I will answer if anyone has any more doubts

I recently used Muncha house to send some money to Nepal. I give them an A for their service (not an A+ because of there is another agency that you need to call which will verify that your information is correct; some points deducted for the extra layer of bureacracy :)). Their service is great -- if you are sending it to ktm, money reaches quick and in the meantime you can track your transaction. Here's how it worked in my case. I signed up for the service online on Thursday and called muncha.com. They gave me another number (for the agency which verifies your info). I called them up the same evening and sent money on Friday afternoon (using Internet check - basically you need to give them your account and the routing (sp?) numbers). By Saturday afternoon here (Saturday evening in Nepal), they had called my brother and told him the amount of money that had arrived. By Sunday afternoon in Nepal, they had deposited the money in my brother's account. I am not sure how much other transfer agencies charge, but given muncha's service, I would be willing to pay extra to muncha than go through another agency that takes longer and is not so user-friendly, so to speak.

muncha is not bad. i've been using them for the last one yr and their service is good. i'll definitely recommend them. but in this competetive money transfer business, moneygram has really pulled up its socks. i think i'll try moneygram next time (sorry muncha). unlike muncha's 5 day service, mgram's service takes less than an hour. also i checked out a local desi store for transfer with mgram and they said that the fee for sending up to US$1500 to nepal is only US$10. hell, you can't beat that. i'm definitely trying mgram next time.
