The wealthiest in America are sucking the wealth out of the rest of the world.
So many of us have come to this country in this generation. So many of our relatives have come to this country. Why have we come to this country? We have followed the wealth here.

Despite missing our family and culture back in Nepal, we live in this country. Despite feeling homesick we stay here. We would rather be living in our own country and be amongst our own people. But life have become so difficult there that there is practically no way to live there and to make an honest living.

In a lot of ways, we have come to this country because all the wealth from our country has come to this country. So many of our relatives moved from other cities in Nepal and moved to Kathmandu looking for better opportunities. And in that same way, we have immigrated from Nepal and come to the States looking for better opportunities.

Advertisements from StarTV and all these channels flash all these 'fashionable' things that our youth 'have to have.' Whether they can afford or not, kids find money by hook or crook to afford these fashions. The wealth of Nepal goes to America and the culture of America goes to Nepal in the form of television sitcoms and advertisements.

Global Corporate culture does not care about Nepal nor any other country. I don't see this trend changing any time soon. What can Nepalese living in America do while we are here to make greedy Americans realize how their culture is killing ours?

Can we blame them? may be not!

This culture you've been talking about isn't native to the Americans as well. It's something that has grown gradually. As humans we all long for the comfort. The present western culture is all about comfort. Not just the clothes but the technologies too. Imagine how hard it is to wash clothes in Nepal(except a few elite households). All you have to do is dump your clothes and press some buttons here. Who wouldn't opt for the easier way?

The love for fashion isn't new to anybody. Whoever it be, it is very important to fit in their peer group esp. when your going thru puberty. Earlier, our parents and grandparents probably wanted new sarees and daura suruwal/ shirt pant for dashain. Or whenever possible. As time changed, so did our taste. The technology did the same.

Instead of blaming it on the Americans, why don't we learn some stuffs from them? Not everything, may be some incentives....why should i waste my energy blaming others for my poverty? i'd rather concentrate my energy on how to get rid of this poverty?

Yes, the Global corporate culture doesn't care. Need to change is definite----the instinct for survival.

I agree with what you are saying. People just sitting around making excuses instead of showing initiative is not good. We individually need to take responsibility for our actions and empower ourselves through education and hard work. I am not advocating laziness.

But we also need to realize that no individual exists in a economic vacuum. We exist as a part of a greater system in the world. When everyone competes and hordes for themself, over time the system as a whole has less. Everyone just looking after their interest starts to have diminishing returns to society and the world as a whole after a while. Though Capitalism has shown that it works great for the most part, we also need to understand its limitations.

That is why Monopolies are illegal:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopoly

In America, what we have in the name of globalization and capitalism is oligopolies in a media based society:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligopoly

The result resembles 12 wolves (owners of fortune 500 companies) snarling at 100 rabbits (the rest of us).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_theory

Though GameTheory sounds great, like any theory or concept, it has it's holes. The 12 wolves along with the politicians in their pocket makes us overlook the blindspots and holes in game theory.

Social traps:
Inherent in game theory is the concept that when everyone is self-centered and is just taking, taking, taking, then everyone as a whole has less. But somehow, in our great enthusiasm for capitalism, we've just ignored this whole principle. This hurts third world countries like Nepal the most. Of the people of third world countries, it hurts the poor the most.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Traps

If you think about it, pretty much all the problems in Nepal are because of social traps: greedy politicians and business men who feel that they can take and take and have no social responsibility to the country. In an environment like that, peasant uprisings are only natural.

What can Nepalese living in America do while we are here to educate people about how ignoring the blindspots of Capitalism is affecting our country and our people?

Haha
This is just a self romanticism.
How could they suck our wealth when we didnt have any.
We never were rich.

They are rich because their forefathers were labourous. They used to send their children to school and college.
They are rich because they believe in wealth creation not distribution.
They are rich because they respect innovation and use them.

And, we come to US because we want to get a piece of their pie.

IS IT NOT TRUE??

If you and I don't have any wealth, then why do they pay us?

If you and I don't have wealth, then why do we say that Nepal is suffering from a brain drain by people like you and I leaving? Nepal's human resource is her most valuable wealth. Whether Nepal respects her most valuable wealth the way she should, is another question.

If you're a professional then you will use your skills as human resource and earn the means to live up to your status. But what do you do when you don't have the means to live up to the 'status' around you? Well, you sell what you have right?

I was reading this study among others about rampan prostitution among middle class girls and women in Kathmandu.

title: Carnal Economies: The Commodification of Food and Sex in Kathmandu

http://www.anthrosource.net/doi/abs/10.1525/can.2005.20.1.001?cookieSet=1&journalCode=can

To break it down in lay person language, Kathmandu has gotten super stylish and fashionable. Everyone, whether they have the means or not feels the need to top the person next to them in terms of gadgets and the latest stylish accessories.

Things are the worst among girls from middle class families. They want to be upwardly acceptable with the rich girls but don't have the means. Gaining acceptance in upward circles can mean good connections for good jobs. These girls have tremendous pressure to maintain a certain image. So how do these girls who come from middle class families get money?

Welcome to the murky but lucrative world of high-class prostitution. Basically these girls go to madams in Thamel and negotiate prices for themself. They go to hotel rooms and cater primarily to business men, politicians and foreigners.

I suppose prostitution is also a form of human resource. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I find it disturbing that there are thousands of girls from well-to-do families selling themself because of the pressure they feel from the media and their peers to live up to a certain 'image.'

Capitalism works great when there is regulation. But in an economy like Nepal's where 'might is right' (ok, money is right) regulation has no meaning. Where do we draw the line?

I see what you all are saying. We come from such a poor nation, that we need to do whatever it takes to survive and keep up and catch up to the rest of the world. Talking about values, morality, people's cultural values is all bakwas. After all, if we cannot survive, then where is there a question of any culture or values or anything, right?

Sedif posted a wonderful video in this forum that educates the American public about the strengths and limitations of our country in a positive solution oriented way. This is exactly what I was talking about above:

hello homeyji, why r u blaming america??????

People haven't brought wealth from Nepal to US bro, rather they are sending it back to nepal. They come here with few thousands of dollars and send back several multiples of what they brought. Do you ever know anything about remittance?? Nepal earns millions of Rs each yr through taxes on remittance that people send back to Nepal.

Most of people who could not even think of buying cars in nepal have their own cars over here. You too are enjoying the luxurious life that u cannot get in nepal. You live in warm apartments in such cold seasons, bath in warm water, watch movies online for free, have internet all the time and You are blaming USA?? Come on man, its kinda like "Jun Thal ma khayo, tei thal ma chuthyo."

Nepal bata ke testo wealth aako chha bro??? Nepal bata ke expect garchha USA le?? in fact Nepal expects a lot from USA in every aspect, financially, technically.

US ko culture Nepal ma jane bhaneko aafai jane haina hamile nai lane ho. Tara ramro ramro culture nalagi khattam culture matra lanchhan bhane ke garna sakinchha??

Restaurant ma khana khayapachhi trash ma falne, batoma fohor nafalne, driving garda rules haru strictly follow garne, aandolan nagarne, yesto yesto culture lai kasaile Nepal ma lageko chha????? sirf dang dung wala culture lagne aafai ani US lai blame garne??????? We should blame ourself not US.

I would say don't blame US rather praise it for helping Nepal financially and technically. Blame ourselfs for copying only the bad cultures.
