Introduction

 

The Himalayan Kingdom Nepal has more than 36 different ethnic groups all over the country, among them Tamang is the typical Nepalese ethnic group from Mongolian family migrated from Mongolia in the ancient period of time. Generally most of the Tamangs are located around the Kathmandu valley. Kavre, Sindhupalchok , Makawanpur and Nuwakot districts are the main area where we can find the Tamangs. Still Tamangs are spread all over the country from east to west and north to south. Mainly Tamangs are known as a facilitator of other people rather than doing their own business because of illiteracy and poverty.

With the flows of time the Tamangs also became educated and experienced in   different fields and started to visit other countries in all over the world. Similarly the Tamangs started to migrate to different states of the United States. Like other cities, Boston also became the main inhabitance of the Tamangs. In order to bring all Tamangs under a single umbrella and increase brotherhood and friendship in each other, Tamangs living in boston decided to form a  tamang society. Around 20 Tamang member's Meeting held on  15th April 2007 in  Somerville  formed “Boston Tamang Society” with four members of  advisory committee  and thirteen executive board members under the presidency of Mr. Lok Bahadur Lama.The first meeting decided to show a cultural program “Damfu Saanjh” every year on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the Lord Gautam Buddha which lies generally in May. In order to run the society every members became ready to support financially for the society. Including previous balance and donations collected in the meeting the BTS collected $3278.00. Similarly by the day of first Damfu Sanjh, BTS became able to collect $6484.00

First Damfu Saanjh 2006 was held on 15^th may 2006 in Anthony hall Somerville with the help of “Tamang Society of America”, New York. This society made 226 copies of DVD of that program. Since it was the first show of the society a lot of weakness were seen which needed to be improved. Because of that reason the society had to bear the loss of $940.00, whereas in second Damfu Saanjh 2007 could make the approximate profit of $1000.00 which was held on Monday May 28, 2007 in Good Time Emporium Somerville. The society sold 200 copies of DVDs of that program.

Goals

 The goals of this society are preserve Tamang’s culture, language and religion, work for Tamang and other Nepalese indigenous peoples’ right and welfare, help poor Tamang communities in Nepal for their social, educational, health and economic development, work for Tamang and other Nepalese Indigenous people’s human right, peace, democracy and development, extend sincere support for a peaceful social transformation of Nepal to any other indigenous peoples’ organization in Nepal and USA

So??  We have at least a 100 different samaj organizations here in NY and I'd dread the day each one of them came forward and started a thread on their organization's logo, etc .  Not trying to bring you guys down (as samaj sewa has always been necessary and I applaud your initiative on this stance) but there is a separate section on sajha for NGOs and Non-Profits where you could post up your website address and  peeps could check it out there.  BTW, all the best in your org's endeavors.
